has been an indoor cat all her life, but one day not to long ago she escaped for the day .. Ever since, she has started urinating and defecating outside of her LB. She's had her stool tested for parasites, there were none. Now she has started scraping her bottom along the carpet. This is a rented house for my sister/niece and they can't let this keep happening but currently my sister does not have the cash flow to take her to the vet.

I was just wondering what, if anything, could cause this to start suddenly? It's only been about the last month to month and a half since she got out for the day.

Also, what is the best cleaner for carpet, to get rid of the odors?

tell your niece to stop by the pet store and pick up Nature's Miracle to clean the rugs with. She can get the dog or cat version (I don't think it matters), what I did see is the dog version is a better deal dollarwise.

thank you hillary .. I'm paying for the cat to get to the vets tomorrow so I'll also stop and pick up some of that for them to clean with .. that won't ruin the carpets, right?

You are very nice to help your sister with her cat and getting her to the vet. I hope it is an easily solved problem.

Thanks Dyana .. I hope it is something like her anal glands .. I know my sister is not ready to drop a bunch of money into this cat as they will have to be moving soon anyways, most likely to a pet free home but there is no need for the cat to suffer in the meantime.

It should be ok, but you may want to spot test it first. I also noticed that it tends to leave a soapy residue, so you may need to take paper towel or rag and water to it after to get it all up.
