My kitty is having a severe pancreatitis attack - help!!!

I haven't been on this board for a very long time, but I always value the advice because in the past, one of my kitty's life was saved by information I received on this board.

Well, I'm back. One of my kitties, Jax, was just recently diagnosed with severe pancreatitis.

His symptoms: Suddenly this morning: vomiting, diarrhea (& straining to have a BM); lethargic.

Took him to the vet: They did blood work; sub q fluids (to check urinary blockages - there were none). Couldn't do xray without sedation. Jax gets way too "excited" at the vets. Blood work was ok except for a few areas: cholesterol, borderline thyroid, and I forget the other 2.

I brought him home, and he continued to vomit and strain to have a BM. Brought him back a few hours later; they sedated him and did an ultrasound and found fluid in his stomach and what may have been an abdominal obstruction, and a very high fever - 103. That's when they did surgery to explore what was going on.

Diagnosis: severe pancreatitis attack.

He is presently staying at the vet's for I don't know how long until he's better.

My question? I know pancreatitis is awful and difficult to treat. I know he'll need to have a special diet.

I'd like to know what others here do with their kitties who have pancreatitis issues.

My kitties only eat canned food: Wellness - 1/2 of a 5 oz can in the morning; Fancy Feast (low carb varieties) - 1/2 a 3 oz can in the evening. At bedtime we give them a "treat": about 10 pieces of dry food (I call it kitty crack!)

Can you help?

Thank you!!! I'll check those websites out right away.

Glad to hear that a low fat diet may not be necessary. I don't want to get caught up in buying prescription food, dry, ever again!

Re: My kitty is having a severe pancreatitis attack - help!!

My cat, Kitty, has chronic pancreatitis and has had some severe flare ups. The three main tools that I use to treat her when she has an attack is Buprenex for pain, sub q fluids, and pepcid. I did also opt for low fat diets. Pancreatitis is very painful to the cat. Not only have I battled pancreatitis in my cat, but my Dog Sally just stayed 5 days in ICU with an acute case of pancreatitis.

Is your cat still eating? Both Sally and Kitty ate very little during their attacks. Once they regained their appetites, I fed very small meals for a period of time in an effort not to stimulate the pancreas or put it in overload. I actually did not do it in small enough meals for Sally, and I overfed, and we ended up back at the emergency vet!

I found that Fluids were very helpful in the treatment.

Both my Kitty and Sally are doing fine now!

Good Luck!

Actually he was eating fine right up to this morning! Never noticed anything different! In fact, he ate his whole breakfast this morning, then threw it all up!

Just so you know, Jax is not diabetic. I know about this board because my Oscar(GA) was diabetic!
