I'm sorry you're in this predicament.

We can't really say much until you answer some questions for us.
What insulin are you using?
What dose and how often?
What are you feeding?
Are you home testing?

Best insulins for cats are Prozinc, PZI, Lantus, and Levemir. These all last roughly 12 hours in the cat and need to be given every 12 hours in most cats. Any other insulins won't last long enough, resulting in hours of time where no insulin is working. If you're not on 1 of the 4 listed, changing may help considerably.

Over the counter, canned, low carb food such as Friskies pates may drop the glucose 100 mg/dL. If you're feeding dry food, that could be part of the problem. Unless you are home testing, however, wait to change food, for safety reasons.

Hometesting will keep your cat safe and allow you to see if the dose needs adjusting. All you need is an inexpensive human glucometer, such as the WalMart ReliOn Confirm or Prime, matching test strips, and 26-28 gauge lancets to prick the ear for a tiny blood droplet.

sorry still trying to figure the site out , he is taking insulin every 12 hours . i am giving him wet food 2 times a day , he just sleeps a lot. always hungry, i keep dry food down for him , because he seems as if he never gets full., i got him from the a kill shelter 6 years ago , he was too big so they were going to put him down, so i had him on diet food from the vet . he seems to have issues with his back legs??

Ok let's start at the beginning..

Those 2900 numbers were at the vets right?

What flavour and type of food are you feeding

What kind of insulin

We may be able to tweak a few things to bring his blood sugar down.. So please let us know

It's important to know what food you're feeding, and for you to go ahead and start getting rid of the dry. Dry foods are too high in carbs, so it's like trying to get diabetes under control while feeding a child nothing but bread, potato chips and Ho Ho's.

Here's a list of pretty much any food you can buy (in the US anyway) with the carb percentage broken down for you (Column C). You want to find wet, canned or raw foods that are less than 10% carbs. Just transitioning him off higher carb foods could bring his numbers down considerably.Food Chart of canned foods with carb percentages

He's eating constantly because he doesn't have the insulin required in his body to breakdown the foods he's eating so they can fuel the cells. Once you get him better regulated, he should start to eat less. Our diabetic kitties are basically starving, despite eating huge amounts of food because it can't get into their cells.

What insulin are you using, and at what dose? Also, if you are already giving insulin, don't withdraw the high carb dry (or wet) too fast. We've seen people come here, take away the dry and go to only low carb wet, and their numbers drop all on their own...if you're also giving insulin, you need to be watching that he doesn't start to go too low after the high carb foods are gone. He may very well need a reduced dose once on a low carb diet.

Re: my cats numbers are 2900 i need to know should i put him

Hi,

Can I just clarify..
Are you saying that your cat's blood glucose level is between 2900 and 3800....???
Is it possible that you have got those figures wrong somehow? Just wondering if an extra '0' has somehow got added on the end of those numbers because they are phenomenally high...
And if the glucose really is that high, did the vet suggest hospitalizing the cat and maybe using a fast acting insulin to try to get the blood glucose levels lower? Or were you just told to inject insulin twice a day?

I strongly suggest that you get a blood glucose meter and start testing your cat's blood glucose at home ASAP. We can help you learn to do this. It's not difficult. Honestly.

Don't give up hope. We are here for you.
