My cats acts like she is starving to death

Hi. I am new to this forum. I am going try and make this short and sweet. Noah was a feral cat when I found her 7 years ago. She is now an indoor cat. Noah was diagnosed with diabetes 8 months ago. She was on a free-feed dry food diet before being diagnosed with diabetes. She now eats 3 times a day (wet food/dry food(tiny bit at night)/can protein) Because her diet is now restricted her life revolves around food. For example, she fell asleep with her head in the bowl and woke me up clawing at my face for food just last night. Keep in mind, she is borderline overweight. As my vet explained to me, because she was homeless and couldn't find food, she will still worry if there will be a next meal. Because the quality of her life is already tough with the diabetes, I'm wondering if there is a low carb dry food out there that I can test for free feed. I will continue the wet and can protein. I will just need to monitor her blood sugar and weight. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!
 
I have Jones on Rawz and he is pretty much free fed as that is the best way for me to feed him.

If she isn't regulated her body can't access all the nutrients of the food she is eating. So she is legitimately hunger.
 
Do we know what Noah's bg levels are? As Tracey&Jones said, if she is still in the higher numbers she could just actually be hungry and may need an increase in insulin?
 
Thank you for the responses. I just had her bg (sorry, I need to learn the terminology) checked yesterday, if you are referring to her glucose level, it was at 65 so we lowered her insulin from 5iu to 4iu twice a day. When she got diagnosed with diabetes, she lost weight, drink tons water...all the normal stuff. Once we got everything regulated and Stopped the free-feed the madness began. She has always been one to panic if her bowl was empty. I will just have to watch the weight and bg because it took diet and 5iu twice daily just to get it under control. Rawz? Where do you buy it? I will research. Thanks again for the responses.
 
Can you please tell us more as to :
what insulin is she on?
the current dose and injection schedule?
what brands and how much and how often does she eat?
do you home test?

If you are giving up dry, which you should, I would first lower that dose further. Feed as much low carb wet as she wants to stop the weight loss. Most of us feed several times a day. Just no food 2 hours prior to the preshot test.
 
Home testing is so important and we can help you learn how to do it. She is on a relatively high dose of insulin and the 65 is concerning depending on when she last had her insulin. I feed my guy small meals 6-7 times per day. He's always been crazy for food. I recently had his blood tested for acromegaly and the diagnosis justifies that I can feed him more. Sometimes there is a medical reason that they are demanding to eat.
