hi...my Gobbles was just prescribed lantus....1 unit every 12 hours...i just gave him his first injection at 12:45 pm, today...55 minutes ago...how long does it take to kick in? the dose is so small. i am fearful of making a tiny mistake on the dose and giving him too much/too little...i have test equipment and made note of symptoms of hypo and hyperglycemia...have karo on hand...any help would be truly appreciated confused_cat

One unit it a good starting point. Test before each shot and then give the shot. Don't be alarmed if you think the dose is to small, to much insulin can cause more problems then to little. The idea behind Lantus is start low, go slow. So, give the dose and do switch your cat over to canned foods. Go look at Janet's and Binkys charts. I feed my Samwise Fancy Feast classics or Friskies Pates. NO GRAVY! To high in carbs for your cat. It's important to check before each shot as feeding the correct food can cause a remission of the diabetes. Good luck. If you are not getting enough help on this board, come over the Lantus- Tight regulation. Lot's of "eyes" over there. Welcome! and don't feel to overwhelmed, everyone was that way once. :-D

I am being VERY careful with the dosage and when I pull back on the plunger I have been getting 3 or 4 lines on it, then pushing out insulin on a paper towel down to the second to last line...I do that because I'm freaked out that there may be a minute air bubble in the syring...I printed out Janet & Blinky's chart and highlighted all the foods (friskie & fancy feast) that have 6 carbs or less--my vet told me he wanted me to stick with wet foods that were less than 7....does all this sound okay? thanks once again....

Sounds good to me. I usually try to pull in the amount prescribed. I've not had trouble with bubbles, I've seen them in the syringe usually at the bottom and go ahead and shoot anyway. I think that is from old movies the air bubble thing. You'd have to really have a huge one to do any damage.

If you can afford better food Merricks BG makes some very good ones that are all meat. My Sam loves the chicken, turkey and chicken and quail. Smells good enough to make a sandwich out of. He gets them for special occasions, like when I can afford them. I also keep a bag of the dry around for emergencies like if we have to leave for a couple of days or something. Otherwise, no dry.

I have crappy vision, so I went online and found some clip-oh magnifiers for my glasses.

Try See It Bigger to see some options and do check other places like Amazon to find a decent price.

God, me too. I hate trying to eyeball the dose. I put my needle up against a white or light surface to better see the lines with bifocals. Works! :-D
