we took him to the vet bc he had been barely eating (we gave him food that made him want to drink water bc he had a bit of sand in his bladder) and bc he also lost 2 kg. After being diagnosed on saturday (yesterday) he hasnt been eating at all. We fed him with a syringe and gave him his insulin. Will this continue? should i go to the vet again? They didnt keep him on saturday bc he is very anxious and angry in the vets. I am afraid if i go again he will get more anxious. But i am also afraid of him no going to the vet. We are gonna call tommorow to ask what to do but i am very anxious.

Welcome to FDMB
So sorry you're, going thru all this stress, as well as your cat, when Corky came back from the hospital I had to syringe feed him, he had lost 8.5lbs from 16.5lbs, it was very hard to get him to eat, I wasn't worried about the water, because I would soften the wet food that already has 80
% water, with a bit more water so it would go thru the syringe, I would put a towel inside the bathroom sink, and sit him inside, it was the only way I could keep him still. are you home testing before each shot? We would like to know what insulin you are using as well

Thank you for answering <3 i am very anxious this days and since i am on my period too i am extra emotional:((. We were gonna give him 30grams of dry food and a little wet food (the insulin is caninsulin, and they told us to give him 0.05 ) . But since he wouldn't eat we but it with water in a blender and fed with with a syringe yesterday. Today morning we gave him the food in a syringe again and the the insulin and some water too but bc he was dizzy, i believe, and maybe we gave him a bit more water he threw up the food, so we gave him the same and less wet food. Now we took him to the vet and they will keep him for a day or two. They are giving him fluids and keeping him warm bc he had hypothermia :(

Caninsulin is a dog insulin and it hit very hard in a cat it skies down and hard, the best insulin for cats are ProZinc and Lantus, I know is all to hard too fast, but is going to be ok, you are not alone, I have cried till I had no more tears, sleepless nights, so much stress, thinking I was not doing enough or wrong, we all have been there, but I promise you it gets better, I was told these wise words “ take a step back, breath in breath out cats are very sensitive to stress, you stress they stress” and it is important to test before each shot especially with Caninsulin treating a couple of hours is wise, if you get a very low BG yiu can give a couple of tsp of low carbs, test in 1/2 hour if it keeps lowering the BG give 1 tsp of medium carbs and repeat until you get a safe number, you can ask your vet to change insulin to ProZinc or Lantus, keep asking we are here for you

Thank you so much. Now he is in the vet and i am gonna ask if we can change it to prozinc or lantus. This insulin was 20 euro so it was cheap but i am looking at the other two and lantus is the cheapest. I dont really care about the price right now but if he continues leaving off of insulin (which will probably be like that) we will need something manageable to buy. We also gonna need to buy a blood sugar counter or something so we can check. How old was your cat when he got diagnosed? And how long do you think it had it? My cat is 10 now and they say he had it for two months so i am hoping we found it quickly so we can treat him (also they told us to give him two shots)

Well he was 9 now he is 12 he was weighing 16.5 lbs he is a very large cat, I had no idea about feline diabetes, I’m kept seeing him glued to the water bowl and throwing the water out, he would meaw constantly in front of it, but I paid no mind I just thought he was playing, until one day I called both cats for a treat and he did not move, at that time since I adopted him at 8 weeks old he was very shy and whenever I passed by him he would shyly move away, that day he just sat there, I approached him, he did not move away and let me pick him up, he felt like a feather, since he’s a large cat he has a lot of skin, I took him to the scale and he weight 8.5 lbs, I ran to an emergency pet hospital and spend 9 hours, he’s bladder was so full of water, that’s why he kept crying he wanted more water, and they gave me the news his BG was 650 he spend 8 days hospitalized, there were no other signs he played ate peed nothing was different, I almost lost him, but thanks to Suzanne and the amazing member in this forum he’s brand new, although his BG number are as if he is in remission, he will be a lifetime diabetic, at the beginning I was at the point of a nervous breakdown, so, it does get better

You can purchase any human monitor, most members use the ReliOn premier monitor and strips, you can purchase it at Walmart the monitor is $19.99 and the strips are $9.00 for 50 and $17.88 for 100, is always good to have extra strips, especially at the beginning that we miss a lot

I am based in greece but if any human monitor works then i will be sure to buy one! Thank you for your help and i wish you and your cat tons of love ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Oh wow! Greece, awesome, and yes any human monitor is good make sure you get the strips for the monitor you are buying each monitor has is own strips!

oh i just saw this. Wow thank god you noticed :) i am happy for your cat and i hope he lives a long life. I also feel more relieved to see that more cats are like that bc of diabetes bc i thought he had a bigger problem that couldnt be treated. Can cats get cured from diabetes or just go in remission for a long time? My cat was eating less and less but he was still emptying his bowl so he thought he might saving his food for later since we gave him one handful in the morning and one in the night ( he also drank a lot of water bc of the food since he has sand in his bladder and without plenty of water he cant pee). So we didnt think much of it bus after he lost visible weight we started to panic so we phoned the vet and after some blood test, everything was high because he was diabetic in the past 2 months. All his organ are slightly inflammated bc of this. They told us that him drinking water might have saved him. Now i hope he will start getting better since he is getting fluids in the vet. Also if my vet tells me to stay on caninsulin what should i do?

There is no cure for diabetes. Diabetes can go into remission. Sometimes it cames back for one reason or another but a short course of insulin may be all that's needed to go back into remission.

If your cat isn't eating or drinking anything, the best place for him to be is at the vet hospital where he will get the necessary treatment. Has the vet checked for ketones in the urine? Run a FPLI test for pancreatitis?

The best food for a diabetic is low carb wet food. This food list contains some of the options also available in Europe. UK Cat Food List

I had the same question as above about ketones. Make sure they check for any infection or inflammation, in addition to pancreatitis.

they say he has pancreatitis from diabetes too. Also she just told me that the liver in the scan was white :(

Sounds like jaundice. Fatty liver disease can cause that. Fatty liver is typically caused by not getting enough calories in. Since your cat hasn't been eating much, if anything lately, I suspect your cat has fatty liver disease. A feeding tube can be really helpful to get essential calories and nutrients in if your cat won't eat on his own. It sounds scary but it can save your cat's life. Ask the vet if a feeding tube would be helpful to your cat. Depending on the type of feeding tube, medicines can also be given through it. Feeding Tubes For Cats
