My cat is being really strange

I'm hoping you guys can help me figure out what's going on with my kitty. Just for background: he's a diet-controlled diabetic kitty.

He has not been eating well (barely anything except for eating a few pieces of dog food when we feed the dogs in the evenings) or the past few days. I haven't changed anything about his food, he just won't eat it. He's seemed a little more inactive than normal, but not too much difference than normal lazy cat behavior. He's still peeing fine, pooped yesterday (but not today), grooming himself, and being social. He just won't eat. The other weird thing that he's doing anytime I put his food bowl in front of him, he starts scratching at the ground or the wall like he would do in his litterbox. He will sniff the food, scratch the ground a few times and then walk away from the bowl. It's so strange. I know it's kind of random, but I was wondering if any of you had seen anything like this before. He did try to throw up a hairball a couple of times the other night with no success, so maybe that's thrown off his appetite, but I'm starting to get a little concerned about him.

He did get into a bag of dry food a week and a half ago that we just had laying around so maybe that made him remember his love for dry food so he's refusing his wet stuff. I'm just not sure what's going on with him.

If it keeps up I would take him to the vet for a pancreatitis test, he could have a very mild case of it, might also run some basic blood work to see if anything else is going on. The scratching at the food is saying this does not smell good to me, he could have an upset stomach. His not eating would indicate this
Have you notice him meatloafing, sitting with his paws tucked underneath? Or moving around a lot like he is uncomfortable? I would really get him to the vet though, when cats don`t eat for a couple days it cause liver problems. So please take kitty to the vet and see whats going on. Hope he gets to feeling better.

It's funny that you mention the scratching usually means "this doesn't smell good". I made him a fresh bowl of food in a clean bowl and he finally ate a little bit. He didn't eat a ton, but I was glad to see him eating anything. He may be "meatloafing" some, but I think he lays around like that pretty often. If he hasn't eaten more by morning then I'll take him in tomorrow. Other than the eating issues he seems to be himself, just a bit lazier.

I don't want to cause alarm, but short of "throwing up a hairball", I could have written your top post a month ago. My first instinct was that Bob was having teeth trouble. I also tried ten or more new flavors of food. But Bob never regained a real appetite. I still don't, and never will, know exactly what went wrong for Bob, but things only got worse. Yesterday, I picked up Bob's ashes from the vet.

Please take your kitty to the vet and make them figure out why he isn't eating.

He did finally eat some last night, but still not his normal amount of food. I checked his BG on Wednesday and it was fine. I can check it again today though. He's still acting like himself though, pestering me to go out on the porch, walking around on my head, etc. I guess I need to just take him as a precaution, it just stresses him out so much to go to the vet. He's normal a pretty calm cat, but man he hates going to the vet.

Bob's BG when he started not eating was 63. He'd been in remission for two and a half years almost.

Have them check his weight, and keep a close eye on it. Bob lost five pounds in five weeks.

Sounds like nausea. But its good he is eating again.. keep an eye on him today and see how he does. If he continues to eat more then great, otherwise its vet time.

I went ahead and made an appt to bring him in. I didn't want things to get worse over the weekend and then be looking at an ER visit. I also realized that he hasn't pooped in 2 days so maybe a blockage? I mean he hasn't eaten much to have much to poop out, but it's still odd. He doesn't seem uncomfortable at all though; I'd imagine a blockage would make him pretty uncomfortable.

And now he's playing wildly with his stuffed, squeaky mouse. He knows that I made a vet appt, manipulative cat. :)

I would have them run bloodwork and a pancreatitis test while you have him there, the pancreatitis test is separate from the normal bloodwork, as I said before he could have a very mild case. It go from bad to worse real quick if it happen thats what it is. So while you have him there might as well go ahead and do it.
My cat had it twice, the second time it took her life, she would pick at her food, do just what you described try to cover it up, then went to not eating at all. I tried every kind of food under the sun, we call it kitty buffet and she would not eat anything.
So I hope its nothing major with kitty and we will be watching for updates.

Terri

The pancreatitis test should be run on a fasting cat; otherwise, the results may be non-conclusive.

Yes, please let us know how it goes with the vet. Happy, healing vines being sent your way! :-D

Everything checked out okay at the vet today. All of his levels looked good, she didn't do the specific test for pancreatitis but said she could if he seemed any different tomorrow. There was a small amount of hard stool in his bowels so they gave him an enema while he was there to make sure things were "moving along" in there. Of course as soon as we got home he went straight to his bowl and started eating. He's still not up to his normal appetite, but it's looking better. I just heard him scratching around in his litterbox as well, so hopefully he had some good results. As I'm typing he's stalking one of our dogs and trying to attack him, so I think he's feeling a good bit better.

Thanks for all of the well wishes and concern!

That is great to hear! Hopefully it was just a blockage and now the worst has "passed." Do you feed them cat grass at all? It really helps aid in their digestion (and doesn't impact their BGs).
