My kitty Milo was recently diagnosed with diabetes and he’s always been a picky eater who eats a little and walks away and then come back a few mins later and eats more and this happens until he is done eating. That is if he’s actually eating and not just licking the gravy. I also have another cat from same liter( they are 16 going on 17 next month) and he eats like a savage. My question is how do I give him insulin if he’s eats like a bird and picks until he’s done and sometimes that’s over an hour. Plus they gave me something to make him hungry bc he wasn’t eating right before vet visit so he’s hungry but still picky and I give him food throughout the day bc he wants it and he’s underweight. Hes the runt so he’s so small but he’s bony now ☹️

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Did they give you an appetite stimulant to give before eating? If so, it could be that he needs an anti nausea medication first before the appetite stimulant. Cats that sniff and walk away are nauseated and it is hard for them to eat.
So ask the vet for some ondansetron…the vet can give you a prescription and you can get it from the pharmacy..

What type of insulin are you giving? If it is something like Lantus or a bio similar insulin, it is ok if the cat eats over the first 2 hours after the inspection as long as he will eat.
If it is vetsulin insulin, then you need to make sure he eats well 1/2 hour before you give the dose. So let us know what the insulin is and we can make suggestions.
Also can you tell us how much insulin you are giving please?
What are you feeding your kitty? Have you tried different foods?

Hello and thank you yes he gave me Mirataz it’s not that he sniffs and walks away every time. He is very picky eater from the start of his life. So it’s a guessing game what he’s in the mood for. His style of eating is eating bits at a time. He used have dry food in the day and wet food at night. His brother eats his food in one sitting but he eats a little walks away then comes back about 3 times to finish it over the course of an hour or so. But now he’s only on wet food and his eating style is the same but even less at a time now. I give him 1 unit of Prozinc insulin 2 times a day.
