Hi all, sorry to bother anyone, but I have what I deem an emergency with my Diabetic 8 year old male cat Osiris. He was diagnosed in 2008 with diabetes, and has been on insulin ever since, the last 2 days he has been acting odd, and last night was the worst, i checked his urine with the test strips, and its the highest level on the bottle, i just got a diabetic meter recently and am having so much trouble getting a blood sample from him its impossible, at this time, i have called my old vet 3 hrs away and new one down here where i moved to recently and they are not in (HOLIDAY?). he has been growling, acting mad at his tail, doing mad dashes after using the litter box, glassy eyes, i am sure his insulin levels need to be changed, just trying to get info whilst i wait until i get ahold of a vet. Thanks anyone that may help. As ever, sandra
GOT Ahold of Employee from vet OFFICE and got his blood checked and UPPED his INSULIN SHOT>
THANKS TO ALL WHO TRIED TO HELP. Just UPDATING. I was TOO involved with HELPING OSIRIS to get back online sooner. Thank YOU all. Sandra

Re: My cat acting weird and Insulin level

where are you located? i doubt anyone's close enough to help given your description but one never knows.

can you keep trying to get a blood sample? is there anyone there that can hold him this time while you try?

and also, tell us what meter you have. maybe someone has a trick to help you get blood easier

if kitty has glassy eyes and acts lethargic at all, stumbling, etc.....rub some syrup on his gums

if he's glassy eyed and full of energy then it's most likely not low blood sugar so forgo the syrup

Re: My cat acting weird and Insulin level

hello he is energetic, not hypoglcemic, due to the symptoms ive read up on, i got a freestyle freedom blood glucose monitoring system, by abbott, im in Ny state in orange county im from albany county 3 hrs away, im on the border of NJ and PA. thanks
ps hubby is home to help with the testing if i can get ahold of the cat, after all the poking, ive done, i got blood to the sample strip twice now and said error codes, because i put the meter to his skin to procur the blood, the lancets are a joke

New York

A condition called Hyperthyroid can make cats hyperactive and aggressive -- diagnosis would require bloodwork at the vet's.

Please EDIT your first post and change the subject to include "Orange Cty, NY"

We do have some members that may be close enough to help out with the home testing, or possibly even a vet recommendation.

Re: My cat acting weird and Insulin level

I'm sorry to hear that Osiris is not feeling well. It can be so stressful and scary for everyone involved.

Does he have any other symptoms?
Is he eating and drinking more/less than usual?
Is he peeing/pooping more/less than usual? Is he straining in the litterbox? Does his poop look normal?

To get his blood sugar tested, have you tried wrapping him tightly in a towel first? Warming his ear first (use a sock with rice in it, microwaved for 30 seconds)? Placing his ear against a flashlight so that you can see the veins clearly and have something hard to prick against? Putting a thin coat of Vaseline on his ear before pricking so that the blood makes a nice drop rather than spreading in his fur?

Am I understanding correctly that you tested with ketone sticks and it came back as the highest value? large I think?

If this is the case, you need to get your cat to a vet asap.

Re: My cat acting weird and Insulin level

It might help if you can get a drop of blood to put that droplet on your fingernail and then use the test strip. Since you are not a moving target like your kitty.

Some vets, like Drs, take a weekday off to make up for working Saturdays.

A high sugar level and "acting weird" could mean diabetic ketoacidosis. Usually the weird is lethargic, though.

You can search for an ER vet on this site. This one is in Orange County.

You sound worried about his behavior. Please consider going to the vet. Now.

Can you confirm that you are using the sticks that test glucose, and not the ones that test ketones? I hope you will continue to try to get the blood sample... but if you are using glucostix, then he's not hypoing, anyway.

Will you keep us updated?
