Hi everybody,

My medium haired, male, black cat is starting to turn gray on the underside of his tail, and on the back of his back legs. He is approx.10-11 years old and has mild asthma. Has anyone heard of this before? It seems to have happened kind of suddenly - over the past 4 weeks, I'd say. Could this be a sign of some underlying problem do you think?

Thanks,
Denise

Thanks - I had seen two out of three of those, and they just don't seem to apply. The color change is not on his face, which is the only place they site as being a sign of old age. The rest is just so vague. I was hoping that someone here might have some more knowledge or experience with this.

My mother, who had an MS in organic chemistry, believed that lack of B vitamins contributed to graying hair in humans. You might discuss nutritional/vitamin supplements with your vet.

In case anyone is interested, the vet said he is fine - it's just his undercoat. Why it seems to be so noticeable all of the sudden, we don't know - possibly seasonal shedding (which never happened like this before). He's getting older, and I guess I'm getting too paranoid, but it's good to know he gets a clean bill of health. She actually said that he is "spectacular"! We, of course, already knew this ;-) .

OK. Good to know.

And yes, its time for all the cats to blow their coats and lay down felt! (Who needs carpet?)
