Musette is out of Surgery and in RECOVERY!

Just got off the phone with the vet, Ms Musette is going into surgery to have an e-tube put in at 4pm today...she still isn't eating on her own although her bloodsugar is great at 123 for an amps reading to they didn't give insulin today because they don't want to drop her too low, especially with her going under this afternoon. They have confirmed that she is in DKA, but even the vet's can seem to be able to figure out why.

They also suspect that she is in the middle of a p-titus flare up so they have started her on Bupe and antibiotics (forgot to ask which one, but its all going in her IV from the way the vet sounds.

Thought I had updated this one when I did her other posts, but at 4:30 she was in recovery and getting her first meal through her brand new feeding tube..Her vet said she went through the procedure just beautifully....Still don't know when she gets to come home, I miss her so much.

I have been followed your posts for Miss Musette, Mel. Good thoughts coming her way. She seems to be a tough little lady; I hope they can figure out what is wrong and get her set right again.

Good luck to Musette! And to you. This has to be very hard.

My Megan developed ketones when her BG was never more than a smidge over 200 when measured (I wasn't hometesting yet and so only have a few at-the-vet numbers). Fortunately, she wasn't DKA and she recovered completely in hardly any time at all. Now her vet and I are diligent about diet, avoiding steroids - which she is definitely sensitive to - and generally taking a conservative line on anything that even *might* raise BG (and I now hometest). She has been mostly in the 50s - ranging from 40s to 60s - for several years, with the exception of a couple of instances when the vet prescribed very low dose steroids and I tested, proving rather conclusively that for her, low-dose is still too much.

Moral of the story: Ketones can indeed develop when you'd think there is hardly any reason, but kitties can recover if treated promptly and properly. But you know that, about the treatment.

So very sorry to hear about the e-tube being necessary. :(

All of this is very sad to me, as well, because I know you watch over Musette, and all of your kitty's, so closely!

Did Musette develop the DKA after she got sick and stopped eating? Is all of this caused by something they haven't found yet? Is this all food related?

I seem to remember that you feed your cats Whiska's, but correct me if I am wrong. In any case, have you checked for pet food recalls on what you normally feed your kitties? Musette may have been more vulnerable to any contamination due to her FD.

I just so want you to find out the source of the problem, so it can be treated, instead of just treating the symptoms and having Musette away from home any longer than she needs to be!

Everyone gets Friskies here and not a single other cat is even remotely sick, and when I feed everyone Musette, Maxwell, & Autumn all share the same can. And since they are all 3 my sugarcats if it was going to effect one, then it should be effecting them all.

Knowing if she got Ketones before or after she got sick and stopped eating is probably one of those questions like which came first the chicken or the egg. <sigh> Right now they are thinking it was probably the P-titus that caused the downward spirial but we don't have a confirmed dx for P-titus yet either it is just suspected and we are waiting for the test results to come back to say yea or nay. And I honestly don't know enough about that particular disease to speculate. Gonna have to do a lot of reading up on it.

Right now it is just getting her stable enough to come home and getting her well from there, then figure out how to keep it from happening again, I do now know I have to watch her closer even in the lower numbers to make sure she remains negative for ketones, as she seems to be really sensitive to them starting even at numbers where I wouldn't think she would have any.

I'm thinking that any inflammation - liver, pancreas, intestines - may be making it harder for the insulin/glucose balance to work well.

Along the lines of what BJ said....when Tigger was dx'd with Triaditis (liver/pancreas/intestines) a few years ago (he had already been diabetic four or so years), he went off insulin completely for a few months while undergoing treatment - until his liver values started improving somewhat, and then he gradually started needing insulin again. He never had ketones though, and thankfully was still eating somewhat on his own, so no feeding tube needed, although I would not have hesitated to go that route. It seems more daunting than what it is from what I have heard. You got some great tips on your post regarding this on Community.

Judging by the time right now, central time zone, I imagine she is out of surgery. Sending prayers for her recovery Mel and strength for you and your hubby while you go through this with your baby girl. :(
 
Praise God for answered prayers that she has come through surgery well. Now your love and care will help her recover. I know how very much you miss her. Prayers are with you both.
 
So glad to hear she came through surgery well! Praying that the tube will do what it needs to do and that she'll get stronger every day. Hoping she can come home soon!!
