Musette - going down in dose again =)

Apparently she is taking me serious that it would be nice if she would go OTJ by her birthday...lol But after running high yesterday which now I'm wondering if it could have been rebound rather than me cutting her dose to low because I was sick as a dog and didn't think I was going to be awake or coherent enough to check on her, she started out beautiful this morning only to nose dive again at +6. And this is an all time low for her a mere 24, but man, watching her you would never know she is this low, absolutely no hypo signs she is purring and playing with the other cats, after she just got done chasing her feather dancer around for a good twenty minutes. Really glad I checked her as I was thinking about giving her ears a small break today...but she is so use to getting tested right before I feed her lunch she will just sit on her testing table until I do...lol So glad I didn't just feed her and not test!

Thinking about going down to maybe around a fat .5u or basically .6u since she went so low today, I don't think just a mere .7 is going to be enough of a decrease. But would appreciate others thoughts and ideas.

You might just try .5u. See if she settles on that or if it still causes rebound. Beau rebounded obviously on .5u (like what you are seeing with the 24 and where it looks like she is headed high overnight tonight from that. On .4u, he was still rebounding, but without the lows to clue me in. NO ONE caught it. On .4u people were saying raise the dose and on .5u reduce it. (I had a big frustrated, ranting post about not knowing what to do and wanting to go back to vetsulin because at least I knew how to manage it! :roll: ). I didn't see real improvement until I got him to .25u-.3u.

I do agree a bigger decrease seems needed, but I just think .5u might be easier to draw....
 
Tonight was basically a fat .5u (plunger resting just on top of the .5 mark) I knew she was gonna run high tonight coming off that 24 at +6 today. I even expect her to be fairly high tomorrow while she settles back down from going too low today. But yeah to save myself the eye strain right now I'm gonna reduce her down to .5u and see where she settles on that. Now that I have finally gotten her to go down and stay down for several days I think she is liking it. Also she is getting more and more playful and feisty, so the added exercise could be helping her numbers come down as well. But if she keeps this up by earning herself a decrease about once a week there is a good chance of her being OTJ by her birthday...lol. I really don't expect it to happen but it sure would be nice if I ended up with two OTJ diabetics. =)

Oh, yeah, two OTJs would be nice! I had Jeddie OTJ for about 3 months when I first had him and he was still way under weight.... oh well.

BTW, what syringes do you use? I use ones from Hocks, but might change... anyway, I have done some measuring of the lines and the stopper flange on mine (by photographing with a macro lens and then using my computer to mark off the photo) and found that the width of my lines (marks on the syringe) and the flat top edge of the stopper were both .2u (actually about .18u), so on my syringes having the stopper on the top of the .5u (needle facing down) would be close to .7u. I now use the relationship of the stopper to the 0. and .5u lines as a guide on dosing micro doses and have gotten good at eyeballing where the stopper is. Is it even with a line, resting on the top or bottom of the line or overlapping it halfway?

It doesn't matter what your exact dose is that you are drawing as long as it is consistent and more/less than previous dose depending on if you are increasing/decreasing. Just be aware of the line stopper relationships, Make sense?
 
Makes perfect sense and to answer your question the plunger is resting right on top of the line. Which I double check with a little magnifier that snaps onto the syringe.

The way I was taught to think of dosing is: Resting on top of the line = fat, exactly in the middle of the line = true, and just underneath = skinny. (with needle facing down). I kind of call it .6 because I draw to the 'true' 1u mark and then screw it down drop by drop until I have expelled 4 drops which leaves the bottom on the plunger, just resting on top of the .5u line...Does that make sense?

Although I'm thinking about switching over the next time I order them to these. http://www.americandiabeteswholesal...vetrx-half-unit-insulin-syringes_5739_112.htm Just to see if I like them better as I haven't been real happy with the monojects, as several times I have opened a new needle only to find that I had to toss it because I could see rough spots on the needle. These are a new product especially for animals as the needle is suppose to be triple bevelled to make it easier on the animal.

As long as you have consistency and precision (and it sounds like you do) you are fine.

Did you notice that the "vet" syringes come in only 60/box? It's like when the same thing costs women more than men - adding "vet" to the name on the box makes it cost more. That alone would keep me from buying them. It comes to $17.80 per 100 - the most expensive insulin syringe they have I think. Sigh.
 
Yeah I noticed that, that company does make them in boxes of 100, just not in 31g...if you want 100 to a box then they are 29g 0r 28g. Which to me is a harpoon! Or at least ADW doesn't carry the smaller gauge in boxes of 100 in 31g, and I haven't had time yet to actual go to the companies site to see if they have a box of 100 in 31g. Now a 29g might have worked well with Maxwell since he is a big tough skinned male cat but not for petite little sensitive Musette.
