Murphy's Weekend - OTJ and Doing Better

Well, one unit of Lantus on Friday a.m., and we have been OTJ since Friday evening. It appears that yes, she does have iatrogenic Cushing's, from inhaled steroids, so yes, a steroid is a steroid. Yesterday was a rough one for her, as Friday, she had many many tests, and last but not least the dreaded enema. I think yesterday, she was just burned out from the bodily abuse. She has been a little inappetant over the weekend, but I went and got some Wellness turkey and salmon, to tempt her taste buds a little more and she did eat all of it. And, she is drinking on her own, and so far, urination is very regular with no sugar.

Dr. Herrera believes that the Cushing's is the result of the diabetes, the MRSA and the demodex from the inhaled meds that eventually brought her immune system to a complete halt. If we can get the Flovent down, we will be heading in the right direction and so far, her BG numbers appear to be very, very good.

And, I cannot thank you all enough for your assistance this past Friday. Without you, I'm not sure where we would be.

Regards, Lisa and Murphy

I am so glad to hear things are starting to look better for Murphy. I've still got you in my thoughts and prayers...

I don't want to jinx anything. I'm hopeful that Dr. Renee can touch base w/ the professor at Tufts some time this week. It's really important that they converse about her situation.

I'm sorry to hear of everything you guys are going through. What dose of flovent were you guys on? Cushings is not common for kitties treated with flovent since such a small amount of it becomes systemic. And yes, a very small amount of it is systemic (for those that are wondering!). Oscar has really bad asthma and lung scaring, so he needs a fairly high dose of flovent each day to keep him cough free. It is better than prednisolone though I guess.

Gosh, that Oscar is adorable! Well, here's the thing -- we are questioning as to whether or not Dr. Padrid actually researched far enough into the endocrine system. I used to be very involved with FAIM for several years, and that's the one thing I'm super up on is feline asthma.

Murphy has never once been on prednisone NEVER. Iatrogenic Cushing's is caused from long-term steroid use, and her asthma is quite bad. Two puffs 220 twice per day, but we are working w/ Tufts to see about an alternative. So, Murphy is a prime example, that yes, while Flovent is much safer than prednisone, there is enough systemic ability to push a kitty over the edge. Now that we are looking at other options, if she were to come off the Flovent, the iatrogenic may go away.

Keep me posted on what you guys come up with. Oscar is on 2 puffs 220 + 1 puff 110 twice a day to keep him from coughing. We recheck his x-rays in another week or so to see if the antibiotics helped with his lung consolidation to confirm that it is scaring.

Honeymoon = OTJ = Off The Juice = in diabetic remission.

However, around here, the measure of OTJ is 14 days without exogenous insulin. The trip to the falls for our diabetic cats takes longer than a weekend.
