To all that have reached out to me:

I wanted to express my sincere apologies for "coming unglued" over the last week or so. I realize that I was definitely starting to reach a boiling point, but please know, that it was not a sensitivity towards any of you, I was taking things all the wrong way b/c of Murphy. She's been a sick little girl for so long, and I started to get very scared again. It was very apparent that I was experiencing a great deal of stress due to something both my vet and I could not figure out with her numbers dropping into the 60s. Come to find out, it was the deficiency of Thiamine in the Wellness food and it took several days to get her back on track. And, I threw away a perfectly good vial of Lantus on Wednesday of last week. As I researched on Thiamine, I came to learn that it does affect the BG levels, and also GI tract. In fact, when I called Wellness, I specifically asked if the kitty reported was a diabetic, and they affirmed it.

Anyways, I have to update Murphy's SS, but please, all, accept my sincerity when I say, that last week I had exceeded my threshold and it had absolutely nothing to do with any of you and I was out of line. I'm still learning, and I'm still learning to deal with all the little things that come Murphy's way. So many different things, feline asthma, pancreatitis, diabetes, MRSA, demodex. I've had feelings of pre-grief so often.

Most of all, I am so sorry to hear about Witty. Rainbow Ridge has to be a wonderful place, where there is a total healing and well-being is restored. All things are made anew and they are all blessed with good health. The sun will shine every day and Ms. Witty will get that little kiss of sun every day.

Lisa

My best, Lisa

no harm done, Lisa, it's hard not to get upset about our heartmates...
and glad to see you!

i guess i shouldn't be shocked that the kitty reported RE: the Wellness was diabetic...but bummer!

I know how much you care about Murphy and we all know the stress that having a sick kitty causes. I suspect we will all be happy to move forward and close the door on the past week.

It will help us to help you if we have a better understanding of how you want to work with us/what your needs are. We will be happy to not provide guidance regarding dose if you are getting all the help you need from your vet with regard to dosing-- just let us know how we can best assist.

I had purchased 3 cases of the Wellness food 3 weeks ago, and starting around the 12th or so, I think that's when she starting getting crazy numbers. We couldn't figure it out and then boom -- the recall. She even started having little pellet poo's, which is part of the thiamine GI stuff. Her vet was going to do a curve last week, and I'm so glad I cancelled, b/c it would not have been accurate. As soon as I started the new food "outside of the recall range," she started getting better. I've updated her SS, so I see improvement now that I see it all in numbers, and the fact that she's down to 1 unit is "I guess," promising, although my vet spoke of "transient" diabetes, which confuses me even more. We do know she is starting to produce her own insulin.

I think that I will remain with calming down for a few days == the food scare was horrifying. Don't you look at your babies and think "I wish they could live forever?" But, she's made a total rebound and it's truly amazing as sick as she was.

I'm curious as to how you would "average" BG numbers over a period of time. Is there a way to calculate?

L and M

I don't know that very many people here typically average their numbers. Your meter may give you an average over a certain number of days. It may not be an accurate figure if you are testing more than once per hour or if the frequency of your testing varies on a daily basis -- it all depends on how you want to look at the calculations. I've seen some people calculate an average for the day and then use the daily average in order to calculate what amounts to an average of the averages.

I suspect we don't do the math because with the color coding on the SS, you have a visual of what the numbers look like. It may not be precise, but it does give you a big picture of what's going on.

Hi Lisa and Murphy,

Soooo glad to see you back. I know everyone here will share their kindness and love to both of you. You are both truely deserving of that from all of us.

And thank you so much for you kind words for myself and Miss Witty. I did look at her and wanted her with me forever. More than imaginable. My sorrow is overwhelming and my heart is breaking. But if there is one thing I want to say again, so very glad you are here.
I know there is so much knowledge to be shared by all the kind folks here, I'm sure I would not have had Miss Witty for as long as we did, without the invaluable information, love and support for the members here. And you have provided some invaluable information about the wellness recall for all of us, it is a very popular brand, we just checked our cans tonight (we feed it to our maine coon Timmy, he can't take the raw food for some strange reason, and we like the wellness next best thing)

I can tell by your post that you a doing a little better, if there is anything I can do please don't hesitate to ask.

Your Friends,

Cheryl & Miss Witty (GA)

Edit: While I'm not a dosing expert, I have to think that seems to be a very nice PMPS number for Murphy tonight.

I think she is out of the low numbers now, but I swear, it was from the Wellness recall, and my 3 cases were within the "use by" dates, so it has to be. She's doing good now, but the only thing is that there is one premium pet food store here that has gotten stock in on the Wellness, so I took those cases back and all they had was the 12 oz. cans, so I had to get a scale today at lunch to measure her food, what a trip! I think I went a little overboard last night shooting blind w/out a scale, but we should be good go now.

Thank you all for welcoming me back. Now, I feel warm and fuzzy.

Lisa and Murphy

I too would like to welcome you back. We are all here to help, if we can. I am glad that you were able to restock on the wellness. Bummer on the 12oz cans... We are still waiting here for the new to come in.

Very nice pmps for murphy - i hope a great cycle is to follow.

If you can't find the Wellness, please call them, b/c I just got 72 coupons for 72 cans of 12.5 oz cans. Holy shmoley! And, since I threw away a perfectly good vial of Lantus, they are reimbursing me.

that's great!! and i think it's only right!

Lantus Land gives me a warm fuzzy feeling on a daily basis :-D
and there have been times when they've saved me from freaking out or feeling low...

Yes, it's the right thing to do for Wellness. Especially since I have all the backup documentation, the reports to Dr. Renee about her very low numbers, and my SS, and well, losing that vial of Lantus nearly make me puke!! I'm glad that I was smart enough to ask about that kitty in Nevada that was reported to the FDA. It was a diabetic and pancreatic kitty, and they admitted it, although I don't think they truly realize how important it is to keep a kitty on the same diet or nearly the same. You can't just switch a kitty's diet like that -- unless I guess - maybe if they're not eating? I've always been fearful of switching foods too quickly. I researched in thiamine in diets, and how important it is in regulating BG and helping the GI tract. It also affects the cardiovascular system. Interesting what I've read.

Murphy's pancreas looks beautiful. No more inflammation -- perfectly shaped and very healthy. I'm hopeful that we've rid ourselves of that for however long. That's why we suspected that she was starting to produce her on insulin, although however a small amount, Dr. Renee said she could be a transient diabetic, which I'm not sure what the heck that means but it sounds scary - like honeymoon on -- honeymoon off.

Anyways, I jumped on Wellness right away.

Welcome back, Lisa! Glad to see that Miss Murphy is doing so much better, and that Wellness has been so responsive to you in getting reimbursed for your troubles!

Hope you have a good evening!

Hi Lisa,

That is so cool, about the coupons and reimbursment for the lantus. We checked all our cans and they were all outside the recall date. I'm was kinda hoping for the good stuff from Wellness.   .

Have a wonderful night.

Kudos to Wellness for doing the right thing! Lisa, I am thrilled that they are reimbursing you for your lantus and the food, too. Also, welcome back! FD and all the related ickiness can be overwhelming, we all understand. :YMHUG:

It's good that you came back, Lisa and Murphy. We got our Wellness coupons, too. Interesting, that Rusty had higher numbers (but also more dips and spikes) with the recalled Wellness. I hope he's getting evened out now.
Anyway, welcome back. We all want to help.

Ella & Rusty

Lisa I am very happy you came back too. I want to offer you an apology for my snarky replies. I think so much of LL and the people here helping. I'm glad you will be a part of it and make great friends here too. It really is like no other forum.

Great job on the lantus coverage. I'm impressed.

Let me restart and welcome you to LL. Looking forward to reading about Murphy.
