Do you all put your pens in the refrigerator? I was told to do so, but I saw tonight when I brought it out that it looked like it had condensation in it? Is this normal, or a ruined pen?

I have condensation on the outside of the inner insulin holding vial, and although it makes things appear cloudy, the insulin is fine.

Good luck!

I've always kept my pens in the refrigerator. The way the pen is manufactured is with a negative pressure system. There shouldn't be a means for condensation to get inside with the insulin since the plunger moves down as you draw off insulin. Or, do you mean there's condensation on the exterior of the glass insert? The latter can happen. I would just be careful to keep the insulin in a place where there's as little temperature variation as possible.

I called the pharmacist at Target and she said that the pen is supposed to be left out of the refrigerator once it's opened, but I see conflicting information about this everywhere. The little (and I mean little) bubbles were actually inside the vial. Maybe my refrigerator is up too cold. I'll go with whatever you guys do. I don't want to waste a perfectly pen, although if her numbers go berzerk overnight, then we know I screwed up.

The pens are meant for people to use on the go, so aren't required to be refrigerated. If you do refrigerate them, you're likely to get much more than the 28 days of use they recommend. I have always refrigerated mine, and was on day 45 and going strong on my latest pen. I had little bubbles in the vial also, usually from accidentally injecting a little air into the vial. It didn't ruin the insulin for me.

Ditto what everyone has said... you should be fine. If you are worried about little bubbles, you can always put the pen rubber stopper up and draw out the air with a syringe (just don't reuse it!).

Oh, thanks you guys. I think there's so much happening w/ her right now that I'm freaking on just about everything! Deep breaths! You guys are great and I appreciate your support.

i have my pen in the fridge - we're on our first month using it - but am so glad you asked the question. mine is in the butter compartment in the door and i'll move mine too.

I've had hopefully some success today w/ my little baby -- and thanks for your saying how cutsie she is. She is a sweetheart, and deals so well with her inhaled meds, the shots, the lactulose, the ivermectin orally now, I can't imagine how she must feel inside w/ all of this -- it's overwhelming for me, but wow, she is such a little trooper and takes it all in stride. And, now we're looking at splinting one leg at a time!

On the pen, I actually lowered the temp in my refrigerator a little bit, and had talked to my vet about giving her a mid-day meal, hoping that her numbers wouldn't be so high at night b/4 dindin. Well, maybe she was right -- her BG PMPS was 146!! Would it be safe to say that the mid-day meal helps to keep her from rising to high?

Lisa

Yes, I've noticed that her numbers are much nicer when I come home from work, low-mid 100s, instead of pushing 200 or over, so it's only a 1/4 of a can of food at noon, but it does the trick and keeps her from being nauseated.
