Okay, so I have the one pen from Target that I picked up today. Murphy has 1/2 vial of the 10 ML Lantus left. She has been on that vial since 8/24/10. Is that too long, should I continue on the vial, or start the pen tonight. And, if I start the pen tonight, do you squirt out the first few units to get the pen going to make sure it is accurate, and then one more question, how do you keep track of how many units are left? It's a pretty neat little thing!

I don't know anything about the pens but I'm sure someone will be along who does and can give you that advice. If you don't get an answer soon I would call the pharmacy and ask. Murphy's numbers are looking good! Keep up the good work!! :thumbup

You use a syringe. You draw off the amount of Lantus you need exactly the way you would from the vial. There is a rubber gasket at the top of the pen where you insert the syringe. You do not use the needle that comes with the pen nor do you use the mess with the dial that gives you a dose -- it doesn't work in small enough increments for a cat.

You don't have a great deal of data to know whether your insulin is beginning to poop out. It's entirely your call whether you switch over to the pen.

Yup!! I suspect you can return them. You don't want to "dial" the dose using the pen. I think someone here tried even using a half-unit and found that it wasn't terribly accurate. Stick with your syringes.
