Hi all. I wanted to see if someone could give me some insight on what is going on with Murphy. Since I came home from my two month stay in rehab for my ankle fractures, Murphy weighed 12.2 and has gained some ounces, now at 13.6. But, I have literally almost had to force feed her. Something happened with her pet sitter that I cannot put my finger on, b/c before I fell that day, she was eating like her normal self.

I have tried every sort of cat food available for her and she licks a little and then walks away. This a.m., I was desperate, so I gave her some dry kibbles of Wellness grain free, which she must have ate some -- her BG when I tested her was 176. When I went to take her BG about 45 minutes ago, it was down to 75. She's either suffered major emotional trauma from me being gone or something else is brewing, although her last lab panel was very very good. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on? I finished her antibiotics for the UTI already, but possibly it hasn't gone away all the way.

I've got to get her to eat b/c I cannot let this turn into a liver issue.

We need help, desperately.

When Harley wouldn't eat I would try some chicken baby food. He would not eat it all but at least some of it. Have you tried mixing food with tuna water to get him to eat.

Lisa,
I don't even know how you could check this, but can you tell if her sense of smell is working okay? If kitties or other animals can't smell, a lot of time they won't eat.

is there a treat she really likes? You might try putting it on top of the food and then mixing it in. Other ideas are to microwave it, put tuna juice on top.

If it is really getting dire, you can syringe feed: Syringe feeding

If you think she might still need antibiotics, then a vet visit also.

I would get her to the vet myself, would not wait to long. How long has she not been eating? When they stop eating it can go bad very fast.
Is she milling around? Notice any lip licking like she is sick to her stomach? Has she been hunched over with feet tucked undeneath? Is she hiding more than normal?

Terri

Thanks for your speedy responses. She likes the Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried duck treats and when I sprinkle those over her food, she will become more attentive to eating, but only for a moment. She is drinking and is well hydrated. With her BG at 76 this a.m., and when I checked it yesterday around the same time, it was around 85, I hope I'm not looking at hypoglycemia, or her Cushing's could have turned into Addison's, although it would be sort of rare. Her labs were terrific -- as I said a few weeks ago -- you wouldn't even know she was a diabetic kitty.

What worries me is that they found a gallop in her heart while I was gone, but the sitter (I call Shrek), was giving her Ventolin twice per day, which is a rescue inhaler on top of her Flovent, which can cause heart problems. I never ever have to use this and I don't know how she got the information to give this twice per day. People have used Ventolin to commit suicide and have failed, or have used it to lose weight. It does affect your heart -- b/4 I try anything on her, if I am able and it is of human grade, I will try it myself. I took one puff of Ventolin and my heart was racing to the moon. Imagine getting that twice per day for a kitty!

I just cannot figure this out. Something went wrong while I was wrong b/c she was perfect when I left. I have gotten her from 12.2 to 13.6 since she came home though, but that is through almost force feeding.

Her coat looks great, she's nice and furry, actually, it's as soft as a bunny rabbit. Her eyes are still bright. She is drinking water and I don't see any signs of hyperglycemia, but could this be a turnaround to the hypo side?

It's enough to deal with just learning to walk on my left foot and now this. Maybe her UTI never really went away, although she is urinating just fine.

What is the best appetite stimulant?

I would keep a real good eye on her eating for sure. I had at one time four different types of food out plus tuna and Lilly would not eat any of it that was after going through every means possible to get her to eat, appetite stimulants, Pepcid, etc.
She would go look a it and walk away. So please keep an eye on her and take her in if needed.
Some of the others will come along shortly for more help and suggestions.

PS: did not know that about the Ventolin, I used like 3 of those in about 2 weeks when I was sick about a month and half ago now having constant chest pain going to the doctor next week. Thanks for that info.

Terri

3 canisters of Ventolin? Well, that will give you chest pains and just imagine, 90 mcg for a kitty cat! I just talked with her vet -- the last week I was in the hospital, I had told the pet sitter (i.e., shrek), to take Murphy and Oscie to the vet's to board from there on out. I wanted an examine, a senior panel and a urinalysis and had I not asked for that, I never would have known that she had a urinary tract infection.

So, on to our discussion tonight. When they were examining Murphy b/4 I came home, she noticed that Murphy had a heart gallop, and when we listened tonight, you could definitely hear it -- which would surely cause her to not want to eat. I did have my friend from the vet's office come over tonight and we syringe fed her. I've tried everything under the sun. She's just not interested and I am having someone pick me up tomorrow to take her in. Sounds like a few heart tests are in order, but I tell you what -- she NEVER had a heart gallop b/4 I fractured my ankles. It could have also come from the fact that Shrek was starving her!

As if I don't have enough to deal with by just trying to learn to walk again! But, she's the priority. I knew something was wrong b/4 I even came home and believe me, I would never let something go with either of my babes.

I'll keep you all apprised. Lisa

PS: Gave her sub q's tonight.

Ohhh Lisa
Just seeing your post here. I'm so sorry to hear that Miss Murphy is still having problems. Last I talked with you things seemed to be looking up abit.

I'm hoping maybe some heart studies can give you some more information. When one's cat won't eat - can be such an awfully scary thing - having been thru that with 2 of them recently - I so feel for you. We have used cyproheptadine. In some it seems to help = others no. Again ECID. With the cardiac gallop tho - she may have fluid backup in lungs or elsewhere and due to all that - not feel like eating.

Notice any swelling around her tummy, paws. Breathing any faster or louder. I know you are very well versed in examining respiratory status. Any way you can tell her heart rate at all?

I"m afraid I'm going to be gone tonite till tomorrow afternoon but if you want you can call me tonite. (Tomorrow I'll be in a race till about 12noon).

I wish there was more I could offer right now.
