Murphy Inappetance Help

Murphy has started her inappetance go around again this week. It appears that we are entering a triaditis situation with her, as we now realize that she has IBD. I had been giving her Miralax, just an 1/8 teaspoon once per day, but I'm wondering if this is upsetting her tummy b/c of the Panakare Plus enzymes she gets w/ her meals.

Any ideas? Any ideas on how to get her to eat just a little more?

My cats go crazy for a little Fortiflora sprinkled on their food. Also I get freeze dried chicken livers and crumble them into a power and sprinkle it around. Either one of these two things almost never fail.....

Murphy appears to be feeling better. I think she rebounded from the Wellness recall a few weeks ago. I sure love that little girl. My vet doesn't want me giving her the Miralax, but the psyllium is sort of out of the question now, as it is not osmotic like lactulose. It is bulk fiber and will dry her little colon out. She is so fighting me with the lactulose. Going to have to make it work though. We're going in for an x-ray of her abdomen tomorrow a.m. We'll see what's going on.

have you thought of getting the lactulose compounded in tuna or chicken flavor? might help.

a favorite trick I used:
I used to draw up the lactulose into the syringe and then draw up a little plain yogurt so that will hit the tongue first. Winnie would get the taste of yogurt first ( which she loved) and then the lactulose would go in w/o much trouble-- she was busy tasty the yogurt. If your kitty doesn't like the yogurt, you might try tuna juice or something else.
you can offer a chaser too.-- of course she got both ;-) But I found getting the yummy stuff in there first worked best.

also lactulose works better if you can get more fluid in. soupy food and /or subq fluids.

I dug up this list I have posted before on appy enticement. I hope something here helps.
Since Murph has CP, I also want to ask if you have a "kit" at home for treating flares ?
( buprenorphine, an antiemetic(s) -- cerenia, and/or ondansetron, an appy stim like mirtzapine, and subq fluids ) knocking it back asap is best and of course controlling the pain and nausea are so important in treating p-titis /triads to help your kitty feel better and get the appy up. ~best wishes for ms murphy

Remember -- getting to the bottom of why he is not eating is most important. That way you can treat the underlying cause ( or symptoms of underlying cause) . It is always very important to get cats to eat, as they can quickly develop hepatic lipidosis from lack of food.

Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
- forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
- parm. cheese
- smashed crumbles of dry food
- bonito tuna flakes
- halo chicken treats -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
- poor a little water from tuna in water over food ( I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats-- check labels)
-powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
- trader joe tuna for cats
-baby food -- beechnut turkey and broth or chicken and broth. they have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
- kentucky fried chicken
- deli turkey /chicken
- plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
-canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
- chicken broth -- low sodium
- Catsure
-Clinicare
-Catsip

If enticements don't work, you should consider:
-assist feeding ( syringe or make little meatballs and place in mouth)
-and/or talking to your vet about appetite stimulents ( mirtazapine or cyproheptidine)
