Murphy - Bad Idea on Hill's R/D Dry for Poo

Well, although there is plenty of fiber in the R/D, her BG went to 363 today b/4 dindin. I'm afraid I'm going to have to tell my vet that I'm going to have to just deal with the lactulose and miralax, b/c this could be the one trigger that sends her back into diabetes. I only gave her 1/4 cup this afternoon, and she goes poo right after she eats, but it's not worth the risk of bringing her out of where she is right now. Her vet also recommended oat bran, but would this contribute to carbs?

Does anyone agree?

Yes, once they are OTJ they are diet controlled, so you definitely want to stay away from higher carbs & dry food if at all possible. We had good success with Miralax, I have seen others swear by Lactulose, though it didn't seem to help my cat much. You may need to do some experimenting, and I'm sure others will have suggestions. i don't know anything about oat bran, I haven't heard that one mentioned before. If you look at Dr. Lisa's info on food that might help you get ideas - I'm not sure fiber is really the answer, but I don't know a huge amount about it.

I would think that oat bran would be carbohydrate rich b/c it would be sort of the same ingredients they put into diets like R/D. I'm glad I only did it two times, and although she enjoyed the little kibbles and ate like it was a savory prime rib, I cannot risk her going back into diabetes. It's been 12 days and if it were to be ruined, it would be at my hand. Unless of course, knock on wood, she would happen to come out of honeymoon. I'm hopeful that she is done with this. Now, we have to address the Cushing's.

So, I'm with using the miralax as well.

For Gustav who is 16 and the non-diabetic but have constipation and very hard to poop, our vets at the animal hospital said to use Lactulose 2ml twice a day.

A little canned pumpkin might help with stools, as well. High in fiber but better for diabetics. You'll want to to test to see how it's affecting BG, because it can raise some diabetic cats' BG, but not others. My cats loved to eat it, so it wasn't a problem feeding (i mixed it in with their dinner). Didn't affect Bandit's BG but we only needed to use it for about a week. 1- 2 tsp a day is the recommended amount.

If you try it, make sure you get the plain canned pumpkin, and not the pumpkin pie filling. In my grocery store they are right next to each other on the shelf.
