First time in years, Murphy had a severe asthma attack. But, it's been so long, that it almost sounded like she was choking, not coughing. Like she might have had some stomach fluids come up or something. I'm not experienced or knowledgeable enough about pancreatitis, but could it cause something like this to happen? Sitting right in front of me, took 20 minutes to get her calmed down. I wonder if this is stomach fluids coming up?

Seems like since she developed diabetes/pancreatitis, everything else is so very compromised, her asthma is at issue now more than ever.

She definitely needs something for her immune system. I'm at an impasse on all of this. Her numbers look great though.

Have you got asthma meds for her?

A nebulizer?

Do you use the AeroKat? http://www.trudellmed.com/animal-health/aerokat

Stomach irritation in humans may affect the lungs by irritating the vagus nerve which also innervates the lung tissue. I've not had cat physiology yet, so I don't know if that is true for cats.

Oh, absolutely, Murphy has been on inhaled meds since 2007, and I have been very active on FAIM and have spoken to Dr. Padrid and Martin Foley from Trudell the engineers of the Aerokat and introduction of inhaled meds for felines. She has been event free for so long, it totally shocks me as if it were the first time. She has Ventolin, her inhaler, the Aerokat, and when the vets hear her lungs, they can hardly believe she is such a severe asthmatic. What I see tonight is almost like hiccups, but in the belly, which makes me wonder if she's having some sort of digestive fluids coming up like gerd. I just don't know enough about pancreatitis. I cannot explain the movement with her -- she's meatloaf perched, and almost wanting to belch, but it is movement in her abdominal/torsol area. Nowhere else. This is scary crap. The other thing is, she's not pooping very much at all - I told the vet, but she says it is just getting used to the new high protein diet, blah, blah, cats are canivores, etc., but she has to have some fiber to relieve herself - I can't leave her constipated either. My only alternative is the phyllium husk powder for that.

Yes, my little gal is a severe, severe asthmatic. Inhaled meds have saved her life though. She's never once been on prednisone, so I cannot blame the diabetes on that. She's calmed down now. I think she was in pain - I had to give her bupronorphine tonight so she would rest and she got fluids tonight. I think she was having some pain and it gets her excited.

I wish someone here could just please help me understand what I'm dealing with when it comes to the pancreatitis. I see fast respirations, slow respirations, deep respirations, the hiccuping thingy, it's horrible.

I feel so badly for the two of you! I don't know if this would help but, when my cats have been sneezing etc from allergies, I give them a pinch if catnip in their food and it seemed to help. I don't think it would do any harm.

Pancreatitis - you want to give pain meds and fluids. You have SQuids?
You can test for p-itis - ask your vet about the fPLI test and your giving fluids at home.

I'm asthmatic myself, and there is a connection between stomach acid and asthma. My allergist regularly prescribes prilosec for her asthma patients because heartburn aggravates asthma. And severe heartburn/reflux can be very painful. Ask you vet what you can safely use for Murphy to prevent heartburn.

Here is information from webmd about the connection: http://www.webmd.com/asthma/guide/heartburn-asthma.

Didn't you just start giving her the psyllium husk powder? Is she getting lots of water with it? Maybe it is causing her to cramp? Just a thought. Also has she had her heart checked? Have you ever considered a raw diet for her? It might help with the constipation.

I hope she is feeling better today.

Are you giving Pepcid AC? That is what is commonly used for nausea and acid reflux in pancreatitis feline cases. Also called Famotidine. You can get it yourself, just be sure to get the 10mg tablets, which you can cut in to quarters, as a typical dose is 1/4 of a 10mg tablet, given once a day.

Murphy is doing better tonight, a little more calm, her breathing is regulated again, and my vet consulted with me today over the phone. We are starting Murphy on L-Lysine, (Enisyl-F), although it is for feline herpes virus, it will help boost her immune system probably more than anything else right now. I will be getting the psyllium husk powder tomorrow because I had to check w/ her vet before I purchased it since she's on PanaKare Plus. And, yes, she said I could give 1/4 tab of the Pepcid AC. It's very complicated and today was an extremely upsetting day for me. I didn't sit down until almost 11:00 last night from all of this. She will still get her fluids every other day and no, I am not switching her diet, she loves it, she is eating, and drinking water on her own. The Evo is probably the best thing for her right now, because we need less than 7% carbs. The L-Lysine also helps w/ intestinal motility and regulates breathing.
