Ms.Rutherford BG has been bouncing from 135 to 510. I now have her on 12 units morning / evening with 6 units at noon.
She just got over a uti, meds complete. Having a very hard time regulating her She also has been peeing outside the box.
Help...is that too much insulin, how much is too much?

I am just including the link to the intro post, just in case someone wants to take a look: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/ms-rutherford.182445/

I am sure more experience members will have some questions about the dosing. I believe you mentioned on the other post that your kitty is on Lantus. Normally Lantus is only dosed 2 x a day / morning and evening (12 hours apart). May I ask how come you are also dosing at noon?

The next thing, in order to help you and Ms Rutherford (love the name), there is a spread sheet we use to capture BG test, which allows us to see how well you fur baby is doing, and identify any areas of concern. Here is a link to the spread sheet and how to set it up. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/ If you need help setting it up let us know.... there are a few people very familiar with it.

If you would take some time to fill it out with any existing bg data you have and add to your signature on your profile it would help a lot.

Any other information as to when she was diagnosed, and any other conditions would also help. Type of food, meds, etc......

Hello and welcome. Could you tell us a bit more about your kitty. What food are you feeding her? Are you home testing her blood sugars?

When was she diagnosed as diabetic? Bouncing is quite normal for newly diagnosed kitties.

Typically, you would only dose lantus every 12 hours. Like Nat, I am curious for the reason your vet has you dosing her in the morning, at noon, and in the evening? That is more common with the faster acting insulins like Vetsulin, Caninsulin, Normalin, Humulin, and even a medium acting insulin like ProZinc. However, in this forum, and generally in others, the long duration insulins like Lantus and Levemir are only dosed every 12 hours. Dosing three times a day could be the reason you are seeing her numbers so erratic.

If you have any issues with doing the spreadsheet, please let me know and I’ll help you or do it for you.

Here are the instructions to setup your Signature with some information about Ms. Rutherford too :). Also, 4.0U twice a day is not low, that is a pretty high starting dose. Most start a 1.0U twice a day, every 12 hours. I agree with Marje, that the TID (3x a day) dosing with Lantus could be causing the drastic BG numbers.

There is also the possibility that she's dropping lower since you've stated she's recently over a UTI. Once an infection clears, insulin doses can need to be reduced sometimes. Do you test for ketones?

I'm wondering if regulation isn't happening at that dose because another insulin is better for her? Not all kinds work on all cats I understand.
