Mr. Sir, diabetic for at least 2 years (need to go back and reread his medical history from previous owner), and on ProZinc 4U SQ BID. He's also on hypohydrolyzed food for assumed sensitivities that caused skin/coat issues. It's a prescription dry, so not an appropriate diet I'm finding out. Sooo.... will need to do some research and experimenting. He's only been home with me for about a week, and he's in a phase of not wanting to eat as heartily as he has when he's boarded at the clinic I met him at (that I work at part time). I'm doing home checks and his BG has been all over the place. Brought him to work (emergency vet tech for full time job) to do a glucose curve. Going to start entering things into his new spreadsheet.

Have already learned a LOT tonight after finding this site. Great resource!!! Hoping I can find a food that's more appropriate (possibly raw, have done that for my dogs) and his eating and BGs settle down. He's a good old guy.

Welcome to FDMB!! (Affectionately known as the best place you never wanted to be.) You are so incredibly kind to have adopted Mr. Sir (I saw. your intro) after his caregiver passed on.

I feed my kitty a raw diet. I buy novel protein (e.g., lamb or pork) at the supermarket and use a pre-mix for all of the essential nutrients. I use FoodFurLife's EZ Complete. (Gizmo has IBD hence the novel protein.) One of the members here, @Marje and Gracie did extensive research on pre-mixes and found this brand. My kitty has done very well on this diet. The other option is one that Lisa Pierson, DVM has on her feline nutrition site. She has a from scratch recipe for a raw diet along with a huge amount of information on nutrition, food charts with carb content and other data, andinfo on common medical issues -- including feline diabetes.

If you haven't stumbled across the ProZinc forum, there is a ton of information on that Insulin Support Group page. Once you feel like you have your feet underneath you with the basics, you will find both expertise and support from members. using Prozinc with their kitties on that page.

Please let us know how we can help or if you have questions. (We love questions!)

I had missed your intro post, so I just wanted to send a quick hello.

What a blessing that you do have his medical records. We adopted a 17yr old last year (kidney disease, not diabetic) because her elderly parent passed, and were so fortunate to get her records too, the first cat we’ve ever adopted where we actually got records. At least you aren’t starting from a total unknown.

Absolutely try a novel protein limited ingredient canned diet or a raw diet first. We briefly tried the royal canin hydrolyzed protein for Whisper when he was assumed to have IBD, but it didn’t go well (and obviously wasn’t good for his diabetes. He ended up doing well on Frozen pork nuggets from Primal instead.

Welcome to you both :)
