So my cat Mr. Pink developed diabetes last year. Through Science Diet DM and Lantus insulin we got him into remission. I was testing twice a day and doing my own curve at home an emailing the vet.
Around the time he went into remission I changed vets because I was not happy with the service I was getting as a client of almost 25 years. It felt like I was constantly getting mugged for cash, he was misdiagnosed and when I needed someone to talk me through doing testing I could not get anyone to call me and they wanted to charge me for that and a sharps disposal container as well.
So after about six months in remission I noticed old behaviours and did a spot test and his sugar was up very high. So I informed my new vet and he said to put him on insulin again. I was doing what I thought I should be doing which was testing in morning and evening (drawing and testing blood from the ear). During his physical we also discovered he had CKD as well Stage 2. During a conversation with another vet in the practice when mine was away while we going over numbers she said I should NOT be testing him twice a day. That testing was only for curves. I was shocked and told her that this was, what I believed, the opposite of what my vet had told me.
When I finally got to talk to my vet he confirmed what she had said. That I should not be testing twice a day, every day, that I should give a steady dose of insulin twice a day, test during the curve period and adjust accordingly. He will have a curve this coming Friday so we will see how he is doing. Unfortunately with his two conditions we are not feeding DM anymore but Royal Canin Renal D which he likes to support his Kidney numbers.
I notice a lot of you test twice a day, what do you think of this advice? Is this a new practice? Is it against what you all have heard or do? He seems fine and quite frankly my cat and I are glad I don't have to prick him twice a day. I plan to keep doing what my vet suggests. I trust him. But I'm interested in your thoughts.
