Hi
I'm fostering a newly diabetic cat. A freind adopted him from our local HS and took him to the required vet appt. He was dx with diabetes. She was unable to care for him and looked for a rescue but they were full. She called the HS and was told he would be PTS. Mr. Biggs says "I'm not tired". Anyway, I offered to take him and network him. I have found some wonderful people locally that have helped. In the last two weeks his BG has gone from 600+ to consistently under 200. He is off dry food. Receives just 1/4 unit Lantus twice a day and has loss about 14oz. He started on 1.5 units. I can't keep him due to allergies. I am looking for help with vet cost, supply costs and general info, additional networking hoping for a forever home. . My first question is about idea I have to feeeze portion of food to leave out when I go to work. This will help to spread out his food a little more. Just wondering what you think.

Ps. Mr. Big. Stuff has a facebook page. Look him up and like/share him!

Yes, freezing part of his food to be nibbled as it thaws is fine.

Here's the link from the top of the 1dt section in Feline Health with info on resources for help.

Check that what you're feeding is low carb over at Cat Info there is a food list pdf file in the right column with % calories from protein, fat, and carbohydrates. You feed anything under 10 % calories from carbohydrates - rx Fancy Feast Classic Pates or Friskies pates.

What other questions do you have?

Thanks, sorry I locked myself out of site. Anyway, Mr Biggs has been without insulin since Monday. His BG have been between 77-125. He has been eating FF classic solely for about a week. He was being weaned off dry before that. Paws are crossed at this point. He has lost weight and hopefully that will help him not need to be insulin dependent. I will check out resources. Any suggestions are appreciated.

MommaP and Mr. Big Stuff

Good Morning. Mr. Big Stuff has not gotten insulin since Monday morning. This morning he is 161. I use a Relion meter. I did give him a portion at bedtime last night but don't know exactly when he ate it. He did not scarf down breakfast so it might have been close to this morning. I did not give any insulin. He is snacking on his breakfast so not sure of the value of taking BG at +3. He is reading lower in the evenings typically and I'm still reducing diet gradually to encourage wt loss. I am thinking to leave less food out at bedtime at this time. His BG have been 77-161 OTJ with yesterday am 132ish and this am 161. All the rest have been less than 120. He is getting FF classic. 3-3 1/2 cans. How much should he be eating? He weighs about 16# but should be about 12ish. Other people I'm in contact with think this sound like a lot but when I calculate for calories this is 260-310 depending on the content. I adjust am out to keep it about 270 which is about 23 cals per # of ideal wt. He is not super active but getting more active. I am fostering him as he was going to be PTS as his newly adopted Mom could not take care of him. I dont mind the testing and injections but cannot afford the vetting. I can't keep him as I'm allergic to cats. He is very sweet and in the month since being diagnosised and the three weeks I've been giving him insulin, he has gone from being over 600 to being OTJ for 4 days. Thanks for any help/advice. He also has a Facebook page Mr. Big Stuff. Please like and share as I would like to get him in a forever home. We are in the Milwaukee WI area.

You may be able to courtesy post him at DCIN, listed in the resources link I posted previously.

While you have him, you can reduce allergen exposure by:
- Making your bedroom off limits
- Using a HEPA filtered room cleaner
- Damp wiping the cat to remove allergenic saliva from the coat (wear gloves if your skin is reactive)
- Damp wipe surfaces where he's been to remove dander
- Use a vacuum with a HEPA filtered collection system
- wearing a dust mask and gloves when testing or grooming him

Those BG readings above 120 are not what we like to see for a kitty on an OTJ trial. He may still need a tiny dose of insulin. Do you know how to measure just a drop of insulin?
