Moving to Hawaii and don't want to take our cats

Hello, it's me again, Dante's mom.

My husband is in the military, and we found a month ago that we will be moving to Hawaii at the end of February. I thought it would be hard on him, even though he has been well-controlled on wet food for the past few months, but I was all for taking him and his sister along until I read the quarantine requirements.

It's already too late to prepare the cats for a short (5-day) quarantine. It already costs $1080 per cat for the 4-month quarantine (for which the DoD may reimburse us up to $550, but still), but I feel that Dante will need to spend that time at a hospital instead, and I don't know how much that will cost, besides the fact that I don't think he can handle such an ordeal emotionally. Bottom line I don't think it will be good for his health in the short or long run to have to be quarantined for 4 months. That's 10 percent of his life.

He is already on DCIN, but I haven't received a reply since I e-mailed our new situation. I really need to find him a new home. Please help!
 
If you could find a foster for them, long enough to prepare them for the 'short' quarantine, would
that help.....them send them to you via air ?

Also, there is an organization that does foster for pets of military members....can you look into that ?
Google "Military pet foster" and you will get some hits.

Just something else you can look for. Sorry, I can't do it. But perhaps someone in your area or a
private pet shelter ?
 
It didn't jump out on the DCIN page, plus not everyone will take time to go there.

Per the DCIN web page, Dante is in central Illinois (O'Fallon). There is a second cat in the family.

Just a further clarification. Central IL is Springfield and points east and west of there up to about Peoria. I am in central IL and St. Louis is 150 miles south of me. O'Fallon, Scott Air Force base and East St. Louis are southern IL as they are in the southern 3rd of the state.

No harm done. Illinois is a looooonnng state!

I am not able to take on the care of another cat or cats either. Sorry. Maybe your local vet clinic could board them for the time needed to cover the shorter duration quarantine.
 
I looked into military pet fostering. It looks as if their clients are primarily deploying military, so I don't think we fit their requirements.

I know a lot of cat people, but nobody wants a diabetic cat. If Dante goes to a shelter, he will probably be PTS right away.
 
I am unable to help you with anything except prayers to St Francis for assistance with your problem - he's the patron saint of animals.
When my cousin was deployed in either 2006 or 2011 (he is still at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan) his boxer went to stay with a friend. I hope that you can find a way to resolve the situation so that you aren't permenantly seperated from your pets!
 
Well, you found out a month ago and should have started the process for the kitties a month ago to go to Hawaii and then stay behind another 30 days and fly over with them. So get the proper medical done now and fly over on the day where they would get in faster. I have lived abroad with my animals and with the proper planning and documentation and have inconvenienced ourselves for the safety and well being of our animals. Pet ownership and parents responsibility is not letting your animals down. Animals are a lifetime commitment so you should start the process now by making an appt. with your local vet to start the procedure for entry and arrive in Hawaii at a later date or have them boarded locally and then flown to you when the proper length of time is met!!!!

Dante is not on any insulin. Just wet food.

I called every rescue in the St. Louis metro area! Nobody can take a cat! :(
 
Maybe your husband can go ahead to Hawaii and you can stay behind with the cats until you can do the short quarantine. He can go ahead and get housing all set up then you join him later.

Wow! I haven't posted in a while but this was unpleasant for a first time post don't you think?
 
Well, I can bring that up, Jill. Dante is such a sweet cat. I wouldn't really miss our other cat, but Dante is just special.

I thought it was right on the money. Companion animals should be a lifetime not a lifestyle commitment. If you can't commit for their lifetime (barring unforseen events, which this was not) then you shouldn't have them. They bond to their carers and don't understand why they've been dumped, it is very traumatic for them and makes it very hard for them to trust again.

I hope Sosij has learned her lesson and doesn't plan on replacing them with other animals to be dumped in Hawaii when her husband is posted elsewhere. If someone wants to spend time with animals but can't commit then they should volunteer at a shelter or something instead.
