Moving to a human meter

We are planning to switch from the AlphaTrak 3 to the Contour Next this week. Is there anything we need to know?

I think we may need to modify your spreadsheet for a human meter so that it will color code correctly. @Marje and Gracie ?

The main difference is that, with a human meter, we don’t want Buddy going below 50 (whereas with your AT meter that number would have been 68.)

Yes I’ll need to reformat the SS but it will be the same one.

Etta…can you PM me please so we can get started? Thanks!

I was looking at his SS and one reason he’s all over the place is you aren’t getting any pm tests. Without those, you are missing half your data and cats typically go low at night. For every cycle, you should at least get a +2 and in the a.m. cycle, another one as close to mid-cycle as possible. If you work, then an “out the door” and “in the door” test each day is the best we can likely do in addition to the AMPS. But any time you can also get a +2, it at least lets you know what’s going on. In the evening, I’d say the PMPS, +2, and a before bed test.

Data is knowledge and if numbers are high but we can’t see how low a dose is taking him, we won’t recommend an increase. Looking at some of his BGs, this dose is taking him into better numbers and he’s bouncing. It’s so important to catch those because it’s also possible he could be going lower and might need a decrease.

If you are having trouble testing, take a look at this post with lots of good testing tips.

Thank you. The issue is that it takes 2 of us to test him. We are definitely getting better at it, but it's still a bit like wrestling a dinosaur. Over the holidays, we'll be able to do a lot more test. I'm also hoping to see changes once he's off this stupid steroid.

It becomes even more important that you test often when you take him off the steroids. That can really change the numbers in some cases. Please be sure you look at the post I left you on testing tips. We learned from the video of “Buddy” there and our baby would sleep through her tests. It’s really important the bevel on the lancet be up.

Thanks for your help. I think he’s on too high a dose and is bouncing. We originally started him at 1 unit, and I think we switched him up too quickly and should have been more patient. We’ve suggested to the vet that we start over when he is off the steroid and go back to 1 unit.

We don’t usually do what you are suggesting because his good dose could be, for example, 1.75u bid and then you’ve lost ground.

It’s better to test more, catch the low, and reduce as needed. You should be slowly tapering the pred back so we can hope the BG won’t plummet.

Ah ok. Well he has been tapering the pred over 4 weeks so he is at his last dose this week. I feel like the next week will give us lots of good information because we will be home to test. Waiting for my vet to get back with her recommendations.
