Hello, I have taken in a stray cat who has had many health issues. He had worms of all kinds, giardia, and has had a partial tail amputation due to an injury. So far the previous issues are resolved. His teeth have been examined and have been found to be ok. However, his breath is very bad and he is drooling.

The vet made no mention of ulcers in his mouth, but about two weeks ago my 4 other cats started having issues with not eating and pawing at their mouths. One of them I had to syringe feed. He was taken to the vet and was diagnosed with calici virus. I don't think a test was done for this. His tongue had a large ulcer that was infected and he was given antibiotics for it. I also gave antibiotics to the 3 other cats. They have no other signs of calici virus such as sneezing or runny noses. Only the sore mouths. They are starting to be ok, but are still not their normal selves.

My question is this, is it possible the new cat has stomatitis and is it contagious? He also has severe itching for which the vet wants to start him on steroid shots. I have read conflicting articles on stomatitis that say it can't be passed to other cats and some say it can.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Carol

Tagging @audravincent who's cat Jinx has stomatitis. It does sound a lot like calici virus too. Especially if a recent exam found his teeth to be OK.

Have you tried feeding different proteins to see if the itching is a result of an allergy?

I don’t think stomatitis is contagious. My other cat never got it. There’s a group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/856632484350109/?ref=share&mibextid=S66gvF

if it is stomatitis I’d recommend a vet dentist. My vet at the time botched his extractions so he had to do two surgeries. I’ve heard other people have the same happen. Before extractions he was on prednisolone. After extractions he flares up sometimes. He’s now on atopica.

I am trying limited ingredient instinct now but not sure how long it will take to see a difference. Does calico virus always have respiratory symptoms? He has never shown any signs of those. Thank you for your reply.

I didn't think it was contagious either but I did find an article after googling that said it could be. The strange thing is the cat that I just rescued (tripper) has no problem with eating. I don't know if he has a high tolerance for pain or he has a high motivation for eating since he was starving when i rescued him. Three of my other cats have had mild symptoms mostly not eating right. The fourth cat wouldn't eat at all and was put on antibiotics for infected ulcers. That has been two weeks ago and he is just now starting to show an interest in eating. Thank you for your reply and the link. I will see if I can be accepted in their group.

Sucralfate can be VERY helpful for cats with mouth ulcers. Ask you vet about it. Let me find some info to link for you. Definitely prednisolone can help with stomatitis. Darcy had to have a steroid shots and many teeth extracted (we did not do a full mouth extraction, but nearly a full mouth extraction, he kept his canines.) He was much better after that. When I looked in his mouth when he first stopped eating, it was as red as a tomato in there, including his throat. Does he have kidney disease? This can cause mouth ulcers.... but it sound like he has a lot of things going on. I do not believe stomatitis is contagious, but it's interesting. I always thought of stomatitis as an autoimmune condition. I wonder if we (humans/vets) really have confirmed this, and I'm wondering if there's a viral component to the whole thing (just speculating here... I don't know.)

There's a lot out there on the use of sucralfate to treat mouth ulcers. As promised, here are two articles. It can definitely be caused by calici virus and this can help until you get it under control.

Thank you very much for the links and information. Very helpful indeed! I will ask my vet about sucralfate. I just wish I could be sure of what we are dealing with. There hasn't even been a sneeze from any of them. When I look at articles about the calici virus it almost always says there are respiratory issues as well. I would rather be sick myself than see my cats feeling like this. Here is an article I read about stomatitis. https://www.animaldentalservicesoc....lly knows what causes, the plaque in the mouth.
