I'm thinking about getting a new glucometer today at Wal-Mart. Anyone know of one that has the cheapest test strips??
I'm not trying to dis my Kirbykat...I'm on a fixed income & on disability. Do it hurts just getting down to take the blood. I just want something that I can afford...with strips I can afford.

@Katie&Kirby I use a Freestyle Precision Neo meter that I bought from Walmart for about $20. You can get a25ct. box of strips for about $10, and a 50ct box for about $20. Here's a link to a coupon for the meter: https://www.myfreestyle.com/neo/neo-system/getcoupon

The Relion Confirm or Micro are favorites around here....they take the tiniest sample size and the strips are "affordable" at $35.88 per 100

The Relion Prime takes a larger sample size, but has the cheapest strips around at $9 for 50....One caveat about the Prime (other than the bigger sample) is that some people have complained about getting more error messages which means using more strips....but some people use it with no problems at all

I am also disabled. I get Callie to jump up onto an old sheet on my bed. You can train her with some kind of treat. I just sit on the bed with her brush and she will jump up to get some ear rubs and brushing. Then I can test her blood. Be sure to have everything ready in advance. Callie will also jump up on the bed to get her shot. She is such a good girl!

The relion prime and its test strips are the cheapest. I actually started with that meter. The only thing with it is you need to get an actual blood drop not a mini sample of blood to use it. Just a bit of a learning curve. The strip needs to suck the blood up. Crappy pic but gives you an idea of what it looks like in action.

Just to underscore what @Chris & China is saying -- sample size can be just as important of a consideration as cost, depending on where you are in the process. If you're new, or still training the ears to bleed well, then the smaller sample size of the Relion Confirm or Micro is indispensible to start out with, even at the higher cost. However, if you're well along in the process, or you can regularly get nice-sized blood drops with ease, then the Relion Prime will serve you well, and at the cheapest cost.

We started out with the Micro and graduated to the Prime once it became easier to test and get blood.

The sample size for the Confirm/Micro is 0.3 microliters. The sample size for the Prime is about 70% larger at 0.5 microliters.

This picture should help to illustrate the difference between blood drop sizes:

some reviews said you can use the freestyle test strips with the alphatrak 2... anyone know if that's true? For folks using the alphatrack, where did you find the least expensive test strips?

I also use the region prime paid $9 for 50 strips. I am new to this and the first day or 2 I was using extra strips but I'm on day 4 now and I think I finally got it figured out

No...I use the ReliOn Confirm meter. It's about 15$... 50 strips not even 20$

This was my first day using the meter. My poor kitty I poked her like 3-4 times before I got it. And I think I went through her ear once. I hope this gets easier soon.

It will get easier. Remember to take a deep breath and relax, you're doing this to help CC. :bighug:
Ok tonight's went a lot smoother and I got it in the first try. Whew!

She hasn't been hungry today which is unlike her. Her numbers were pretty high both times as well. Dr had us start increasing her dose just yesterday from 1 unit twice a day to 1.5 units. I'm hoping with this new dosage we see a decrease in the numbers. This morning the meter read 518, tonight it was 423.
