Hi everyone,
My name is Rosalie and my cat is Morgaine. I have been a member here for over a year and Morgaine has been diet controlled until now. But....she is starting to show symptoms, polydipsia and polyurea and her glucose dipstix was +1. I check her blood periodically and she has always been under 150, sometimes in the 80's and mostly hovering around 100 except once but it sure looks to me that she needs a little insulin. I have had type 1 diabetes for almost 50 years and wear a pump but Lantus happens to be my back up insulin so I always have it in my frig.

So, now i need to get with the program and I am sure I will be seeking info and answers here but I wanted to introduce myself to this group. My vet is not that up on the protocol here and I need a vet who comes to my home because I am disabled and homebound. So, I have little choice on that matter but he is a good technician. Because of that I am consulting with Dr. Lisa later today to get some direction from her. I will do my homework and attempt to set up the charts you all use but I must admit it confuses me right now. I have a lot on my plate with my own health, not just the tyoe 1 diabetes but multiple major issues resulting from that and RA. So bear with me if I am a little lost in this forum but I do need your help and support. I love my baby girl. She has been my companion for 12 years and I do not want to see her damaged by this disease. I Despise DIABETES and know full well what it does to the body. sorry, I am feeling a tad emotional right now.

Be back later.

Re: Morgaine needs a little Lantus

Welcome, Rosalie!

My cat, Sue, was diagnosed in October and went OTJ five weeks later with the help of Dr. Lisa and of course, the support of this board! You will love Dr. Lisa. I can never say enough good things about her. She stuck with me and helped me when I didn't know what to do and more than once, she had to listen to me cry on the phone.

Good luck to you and Morgaine!!!!!

Jenny & Sue (and Chicken, Riley, Monroe and Mama)

Re: Morgaine needs a little Lantus

Thanks Jenny. I have been dealing with Morgaine's diabetes since last year and Dr. Lisa has already helped us a great deal. we have had several discussions and now it seems it is time for a bit of insulin. I just hope it is not forever. Morgaine is 13 and needs to lose 2 pounds so we are working on that!

You are in the right place--Your kitty can have an almost normal life with the help & advice you get here..
The people here know their stuff & will show you how to manage your kitty's FD..We all monitor their numbers by hometesting and every 12 hour shots..Not to worry your kitty will be just fine.
We are a family here and all help & support each other..I also have RA so I know the problems it can cause us..Hope you will get the help you need--Dr. Lisa is wonderful & you are in good company.

Re: Morgaine needs a little Lantus

Welcome Rosalie!!

Jenny did great with Sue and Dr. Lisa occasionally contributes, more on the Health board than here. The spreadsheet (SS) is like learning new slang -- once you get it, it makes perfect sense. If you're having trouble getting the SS set up, remember that you can post a question in the Tech Support forum and someone can probably walk you through. You're welcome to ask here. Some of the members are very tech savvy (although, I'm not one of them).

When you have a chance, please look over the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Board. Much of what's in there will probably be redundant given that Morgaine has been diet controlled and that you have a good understanding of diabetes.

The first few weeks of this process are the hardest. Once you get the routine down, it will become much easier. Please ask questions. The people here are very generous with their time and information.

Re: Morgaine needs a little Lantus

Thanks to everyon.

I can't access the SS. Google is not letting anyone do that as they are in a transition. I guess they ran out of space or some such thing. I am not computer savvy. So, any ideas as I can't get that going now. Do I just do a manual one and scan it and post to photo bucket so people can see it?

Re: Morgaine needs a little Lantus

Hmmmmm.... I can log into Gabby's SS and I can get the blank template to open. Do you have a Google account set up?

Re: Morgaine needs a little Lantus

I do have a Google account and it won't let me access but I think it is because I am a new user to the SS. It said it is unavailable until a transition is made to a new system. They said they have run out of space for new user for the SS..

It says I can't access the spreadsheet and then gives a link which says this:
The Internet needs more addresses! That’s why Google and other websites are testing a new protocol, IPv6, on June 8. Test your IPv6 connection to see if your computer and connection are ready for IPv6. Learn more about IPv6 readiness

So I spoke to Dr. Lisa and we discussed what has been happening. Morgaine is not showing high BS. Her numbers are under 150 and tonight she was 114 +2 post prandial yet she is spilling glucose in her urine. Every time I have tested her these past 2 weeks she has been around 100-135 after eating 2-3 pp. Her labs had a +2 urine with a BS of 181 under vet stress. He drew it all here. Anyone have any ideas as to why she is spilling glucose? I have tested her at all different times of the day and night and wee hours of the AM and do not get it as she is always under that 135 except for once, a 199 right after a meal.

Dr. Lisa says no insulin required with these numbers and I agree.

He did do a urinalysis and Dr. L looked at it. She just e-mailed me and thinks Morgaine has a possible genetic disorder and diabetes isn't the problem. Of course I will keep her treated for diabetes with proper diet and continue to test but Dr. L said it was good news because she has probably lived with this all of her life. She is 13, drinks 2 cups of water, including food liquid, a day and weighs 16 pounds. She urinates 6 times a day. When she was younger she ate a diet of 1/2 wet and 1/2 dry, would usually drink a cup or a little less a day and pee'd 3-4 times a day so this increase, though not excessive, is significant. WOW!

BTW, she is a very large cat and probably needs o lose 2 pounds.
