Here we are again with low preshots at our 3u dose! Arg!
I'll be around to monitor Sushi, but we're REALLY low on strips. I desperately need to re-stock our supplies, but Tropical Storm Lee is upon us and I've been trying not to go anywhere.
>>Speaking of: Has anyone gone through a tornado with a cat? Any tips/suggestions?
I skipped yesterday morning, but given our low stock, I just might skip again tonight. I hate that!!

good luck with the storm. I haven't had a tornado hit before, but I've spent a good bit of time hanging out in the basement with cats during tornado warnings, especially when I lived in the midwest. They thought the basement was much more fun than I did (spiders!).

Just stopping by to say hi! Sushi looks like he wants to heal quickly, even if it's not on your schedule

Good luck!

Thanks guys!
The major difference is down here in the south, we don't have basements or crawl spaces. I just cleaned out a hall closet for our "hunker down" space, and pulled the seats off the couch for cover if need be. The kitties are in "explore mode" checking the closet and everything out. So when do we actually need to "hunker down" in our closet? When a watch turns into a warning? When the siren goes off? How long do we have to stay in there?

...I also tried to go get strips from Wal-Mart, but as luck would have it, the Pharmacy closes at 7 on Saturdays (it's 9 during the week).

I decided to dose Sushi at +1.25. I tested him every 15 mins from his PMPS thru +1.25:
PMPS: 113 & 102
+0: 141
+.25: 148
.5: 181
+1: 190

I just lost power and I'm worried about Sushi's insulin. How long is it okay in the fridge? Should I go ahead and put it on ice?

Hi there - I'm sorry for the unnerving times you're experiencing.

Before we even begin talking about your cooling options, keep in mind that with humans, once an insulin bottle is opened, we leave it out of the refrigerator and it's lifespan is 30 days. So worse case scenario.....if you didn't have any cooling access, in theory, your insulin would be good for the next month so that alone should always cover your fears.

But since you do have other options.....your fridge will stay cool for a bit. I'm not sure if you store bought ice or if you are counting on your ice maker's premade batch. If it's the latter, you should probably go ahead and get some of it into a cooler now to lengthen out the duration it will last. I wouldn't put the insulin directly on the ice, but rather, prop it on something so it's in the room, but not direct contact.

Also, we were always told to get into the bathtub if there's a tornado. You will know if there's a tornado - the sound is unmistakable, so you'll be alert to when to get in and out.

Good luck and we're thinking of you!

Thanks Jessica!! It was a very restless night; I locked the cats in my room with me, with their carriers open and ready to go. They're used to roaming the house freely so they weren't too excited about being confined to one room, but we made it! My power is back on wayyyy earlier than expected (it went out at 3:30am, they said it would be back on at 6PM, but it was restored at 7:30am, right when I was testing/feeding/dosing Sushi). The watches have been lifted, so I feel like I can breathe again!

Thanks again!! : )

I'm glad you got the power back on. You got great advice on the insulin I think all of us have goofed up one time or another and left it out . Remember for next time, open the refrigerator as little as possible. Every thing will stay much cooler. It is well insulated, but the more times you open it the faster it will warm up as the cold air escapes.

Thanks Ann! That was my plan--I was going to open it once in the am to get the insulin out for Sushi's AM dose, then transfer it to ice. But thankfully it didn't get to that point! Whew!
