With our new Alphatrak tester we decided to do a BG curve today, 6 days post diagnosis, Monty being on 3 units Caninsulin 2x daily. To date it has basically made no major difference to his numbers. Anyway, today's figures (with 2 to come) are:

Pre-Jab and Food - 29.4
+1 - 25.3
+2 - 27.0
+4 - 26.5
+6 - 22.1
+8 - 20.3

Its been hard work (and poor Monty's ears look like he's been playing hooker in a rugby match) but it is at least producing some useful information. Hoping to start cutting down the (vet prescribed MD hills) and bringing in some low carb wet food to see if that helps.

Despite the still high numbers, I feel a little bit pleased for having gotten stuck in (literally) and had a go.

Congratulations on your first curve, and getting numbers. My first curve did not go well, but testing is much better now. As for Monty's ears, are you applying a little pressure to his ears after the test?. I usually apply a bit of pressure for about 20 seconds, it really does help to lessen the bruising.

Thanks!! Its a start at least and am sure will get easier in time (for us at least). Great tip re: the ears - I hadn't been doing this but definately will for the 6pm test.

It feels good to be (at least trying) to do something about his diabetes.

Congrats! You are a card carrying member of the Vampire Club! It does make you feel like you have some control and that is a great feeling.

You can also use a cream to help with the brusing. We use neosporin in the US; not sure what is available in the UK.

Yes, it will be a great baseline when you change over to wet low carb, and for your vet as ammunition for changing insulin.

Can we talk you into putting these numbers in a spreadsheet?

Be sure to use the World version. It will convert your numbers for us. It's a little tricky; if you need help, just ask.

All - firstly thank you for your responses which have definately got me through our first day of full testing.

To Hope - apologies - I did mean MD not WD - I have tried to check the packet but it is mainly in foreign languages. I read online that both of the Hills MD and WD carry high carb weightings but please please do let me know if I am wrong on this (its all still very new)!

Concluding the curve took us back up to 29 so back where we started. Mootle battered and bruised - myself and partner emotionally wrought and exhausted - but am glad we did it and feel like we are on our way. Monty had some mixed food tonight of low carb plus still some of his old dry food am hoping this makes a difference in a few days.

Many thanks again for all your help everybody - and sorry for the rubbisg typing - Hennycat (an avid writer and possible feline editor of the future) is sitting on my keyboard).

Hi Catherine, have only just seen this - I was following your other thread, and don't come to the board often these days apart from when I am actively taking part in a specific situation. I came here to see if there were any updates from you and saw this. Do you think you could put 'UK' in the topic header? - it would help us UKers see it more quickly. Or, feel free to send any of us UKers a personal message (PM) which will get to us via email and we can come over here and join in.

This thread is a few days old now and I don't know what the latest is, but at least you can see how the insulin is working. Actually I would say that you are dong well to get the lowest figure at +8 - Caninsulin often peters out before that! What were the +8, +10 and +12 (pre-shot?) readings? It does seem though that an increase on dosage is called for - if the vet suggests that you increase by another unit or half-unit, be sure do do that on a day when you can do some tests.

Ref the ear problem - try a little Vaseline! And a little treat - maybe a bit of ham or chicken - after each test will help too, so your cat starts to associate the procedure with something nice for him!

Good luck
Diana
