Monty has had successful dental surgery yesterday. He had a scale and polish of teeth with many teeth having the gums bleeding when lightly touched. In one instance he had a resorption of a tooth that was likely the cause of his pain when eating that's now been dealt with. He's been prescribed Gabapentin every 12 hours and he's had the first dose this morning. He's clearly very "high" as he isn't so coordinated and he's sleeping a lot (it's been about 20 hours since his surgery).

He's not eaten much since he got home, but the little he did eat I can tell he's in less pain that he was, but still eating very little and slowly (maybe 10-20% of what he'd usually eat). I no longer need to pill him for his hypertension meds and he ate the pill in a treat as normal this morning.

For the next few days I need a strategy to get calories in him until he's enthusiastic about his regular food again. What do you think about the following options:

  1. Roast chicken breast (or boiled), I can break into tiny pieces he doesn't need to chew and hand feed
  2. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Honest-Good-Pre-biotic-Digestion-Collagen/dp/B0CB4QWMZT/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2IUZJG8439WR&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.W0EpKtlea6VHdMijOBu2qKpcCr3tczS9sVZoir9q_yjzSHUrZHanUkZrS0nzLv0zpdUE61TRI9Qt9FEUyMvQrLXE_1Sdc1-wYXp_NsFSvPyhFGXCSHz1bKJusyY4oJ7zRUYke2BYGEzgOQkZFhPVonIEkzhUKZvlIvass1S6ZkfT8SgRrp4rfUnXjr7jDkuHVShoDz5YfOd3qPmV8rBeQg.CNsR-EPtjvC0I3hq-ST8DQf443U1x7kI39JXJjPswu0&dib_tag=se&keywords=honest and good&qid=1725367561&sprefix=honest and good,aps,141&sr=8-7 This beef broth that's designed as a food topper I could spoon a high concentration into some water and feed this. I could even put strips of chicken inside the broth too.
  3. Canned tuna in water, broken into small pieces or whizzed in the food processor
  4. Give regular treats to supplement calories

I managed to get him to eat half a scrambled egg (cooked with nothing but the egg itself) and some roast chicken and a few biscuits soaked in water to make them soft. I think he tries to eat too quickly then hurts himself and stops. When he's in less pain later I'll just keep hand feeding small amounts once per hour.

Did he have extractions?

Some ideas in here:
All meat babyfood (no broth with onions or garlic) is a popular post dental option for a few days.

One extraction and part of his gum cut away due to resorption.

I struggled to find an all meat baby food in the UK but he's been eating bits of his regular pate and he's eating scrambled egg (nothing added, just cooked egg). Later today my order beef broth is arriving that I'll try too. It seems to be getting a bit easier each day so he's healing.

He's asking for food occasionally and will eat until he accidentally hurts his wound then stops. When this happens I leave him for 30 minutes and try again.

I’m so glad you look as if you have solved the problem of his eating. Scrambled egg is a great good and full of protein and nutrients. How much gabapentin is he getting each 12 hours?
Sounds as if he wants to eat and that’s great but still has some discomfort which is to be expected. Blending the protein in some fluid is a good idea.

His dose is roughly 10mg/kg (40mg) every 12 hours. Which I *think* is a lower dose to account for his CKD.

Although this morning I screwed up delivering it and wasted maybe 1/3 of the dose but he doesn't appear to be in pain as a result so I might start giving him 30mg per dose instead.

Gabapentin is not a good pain medication for dental work. It is an appropriate medication for nerve based pain. I would ask your vet for buprenorphine. It's a narcotic. If you've ever had a tooth pulled, you really do need a significant medication to manage the pain.

I have enough Buprenorphin for around 3 days of pain relief. The vet did mention I'm free to try either of them and see which works best. Given it's been 3 days since his surgery and he's still a stubborn eater at times in going to try 2 days on Buprenorphin and see if that makes his situation better.
