I just got back from the vet about 45 minutes ago, and he has a new Rx for Clavamox, to be taken 2x a day for 7 days. He was given Baytril yesterday, but it's making him throw up a lot. Also, they gave me a can of Hill's Prescription A/D wet (1 can). When I got there, she gave me both items, and told me that it was a complete switchout. I got home, and took about 1/2 tsp of the wet, got a bowl, and mixed almost 1 tsp of water into it. Took a plastic eyedropper, and gave him about 2 1/2 eyedroppers full. I don't want to overdue his feeding incase he does throw it up. I'll try that amount in about 2 hours again. They told me that if he continues to throw up, to bring him in tomorrow, and they'll give him a shot. I'm not to concern myself with the leakage that he's showing right now, according to them. How can I not concern myself with that? Sheesh.

So, that's where we're at right now.

Re: Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Did the vet do a culture & sensitivity? If not, you have no idea whether Jr. Mint is getting the appropriate AB for his UTI.

Re: Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Angela, I'm sorry to hear that Jr. Mint isn't feeling better yet, I hope the change will help! Sending healing vines and snowflakes for Jr. Mint.

Re: Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Aw, I hope Jr. Mint recovers very quickly! Healing thoughts and prayers.

I know some people are against it and it is controversial for UTI's, but if you are not happy with the Clavamox results for the UTI, we have had great success with Convenia. It is a two week antibiotic shot. Again, there are some who are against it and have had a bad experience. I can only speak from my personal experience but it was a lifesaver - literally- when my civvie had a UTI. It went undiagnosed for over a week. She did not eat, drink or urinate for many days, close to a week and she was vomiting. We almost lost her. The day after the Convenia shot, she was herself again. It cleared up UTI's for her twice with great success.

Hopefully the Clavamox with do the trick though and Jr. Mint will be better in no time ;-)

Re: Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Kazi was on clavamox for a week with no appetite and then diagnosed with a bladder infection today and switched to Baytril! Hopefully both of our kitties are feeling better soon.

Re: Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Angela...if you go the convenia route, please stay in the vet's office for 30 mins after he gets the shot. I agree it can be a good thing for cats who get sick from other ABs but Gracie went into anaphylactic shock after it which they go turned around fast. If you stay at the clinic and any problem develops, you won't have to worry about going back. Keep in mind that Gracie is one of the few cats I've heard of that had this reaction but also...on the other side...it does stay in their system for 2-3 weeks. Good/bad...just weigh all options and I know you'll do what's best. Healing vines for Jr Mint...hope Blackie is having a great day.

Re: Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

sending lots of prayers and positive thoughts your way for a quick recovery ....

Re: Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

how about trying zeniquin instead of baytril? i found a good place to buy it: nationalpetpharmacy.com. it's the sister site to pet food direct and you can buy zeniquin for 1.49 a pill right now plus 2 coupon savings. cleo started on baytril for a bladder infection but we switched because of blindness concerns.
you can also get an antivomiting med like anzemet to help against vomiting.

[edited to add: zeniquin is also a prescription drug. we don't know whether the UTI was confirmed via a culture and sensitivity test on urine removed via cystocentesis (drawn directly from the bladder), but zeniquin or baytril would not be recommended unless we knew for certain it was a UTI and that the bacteria would be sensitive to this class of drugs (the C&S results would specify which drugs the bacteria would respond to).]

zeniquin is in the same class of antibiotics as baytril. i don't think i'd recommend convenia for this. yes, it is convenient for pets difficult to medicate orally but it's really best for skin infections i think. it can last in the system up to 65 days instead of the 14 days advertised so if you have bad side effects it would be scarier longer.

ask your vet for some oral syringes so you can syringe feed him. many vets won't charge for those syringes. cleo seems to like the 6ml or 12ml syringes the best. what i do is take about 1/4 can of a/d, wellness, or evo and mix it with 3 tablespoons of water and nuke it for about 30 seconds. all 3 of those foods seem to be a good consistency for syringe feeding, and if you want the food thinner for easier feeding you could push it through a sieve or strainer. cleo takes about 24ml of food at a sitting.

Re: Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

poor kitty. Emma's had lots of UTIs over the years, and clavamox does the trick, even though it DOES make her vomit. Usually it's just the first couple of days, then she seems to adjust. I hope Jr. Mint is feeling better soon!

Re: Further Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Jr. Mint has been hospitalized, and is now sedated, has a catheter in, and is on IV fluids with antibiotics in it. The vet called me at around 4:30 this afternoon to tell me that.

Backtracking. This morning, I gave Jr. Mint his medication of 1.5 pills. He threw up both 5 mins after administering. I salvaged the whole pill, and gave it back to him. He vomited about 2 hours afterwards. I called the vet's office; and got new meds (Clavamox) shortly thereafter. Came home, and gave him about 1/4 tsp mixed with water; fed with eyedropper (2 1/2 eyedroppers full). He threwup about 1 hour after. Called the vet's office before noon, was told by receptionist to bring him in. Got there about 2, saw another vet, was told that his bladder was full, and possible crystals have formed. Will need to have him stay for treatment. Female vet called me at about 4:30 today to tell me that he's sedated, and has the catheter inserted. I thanked her for calling me to let me know about him. He may be there until Friday or Saturday, or possibly over the weekend. They're going to pull the catheter out on Friday, and hopefully, he'll start to urinate on his own.

He'll have to be on a special diet now from the moment he gets home until the rest of his life. I'm not going through this again. I'm seriously considering changing everyone's diet to wet food only (except Blackie's... She's on FF for the rest of her life). The only thing... Which food to feed them all? Something cost effective.

Re: Further Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Poor Jr. I hope he's had a comfortable night and is feeling better.

You might want to start a thread on Health for food suggestions, though perhaps Blackie's diet would be okay for him, too. I had a hard time switching one of my civvies to wet food, but now they all eat low carb Friskies flavors, so if KB helps with leftovers it's ok for him to have them (he eats primarily Merrick). I have a lot of medium and high carb on hand, too, so the civvies also get that some times in order to keep it fresh.

Re: Further Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Angela I'm sorry Jr Mint is ill. You are doing everything you can to help him get well. Give yourself a big hug. :YMHUG: I'm sending Jr. healing white light and you support white light. Better day today.

Re: Another Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Just got off the phone with the vet. IV's were started this a.m. Hopefully, the IV fluid will help perk him up. Thought they were started yesterday, but she had inserted the catheter in. Very lethargic. She'll be running the blood work this afternoon for kidneys, etc. If they're damaged, I may have to put him down. I'm going to go and visit him.

Re: Another Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

I hope he perks up from the IV....fluids often work miracles with kitties! I hope the BW comes back good, Angela. Sending snowflakes and healing vines for Jr. Mint, and hugs for both of you!! :YMHUG:

It's probably as much the feeling of helplessness, as anything, that so upsetting / unsettling. A visit - that sure does sound like a good idea though...

Re: Another Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Oh Angela - I'm so sorry to read this update about your little Jr. Mint! But please don't give up hope yet, even if they say his kidneys are damaged! My Emma had a horrendous kidney infection three years ago. She wasn't eating, was very lethargic, and her kidney values were very high. The dr. didn't think she'd make it. But, I couldn't give up without trying my best, so I took her home and followed the doctor's instructions. She got ABs for probably 3-4 months, and we were aggressive with the fluid therapy, giving her 400 mLs a day for a while. A week later, her kidney values were almost in the normal range. We gradually tapered off how much fluid she was getting, til it was 100 mLs once a week. She has some kidney damage, and she get a small amount of fluids every other day to help with that, but she's still here and is a happy kitty! Obviously I don't know the situation with your little guy, but I thought I was going to lose my girl that day, and three years later she's still with me. So there's still hope!

Re: Another Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

hoping that jr mint is doing better now. any update?

Re: Another Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

I wouldn't give up yet, either. Hopefully, since he's catheterized, they will get a sterile sample and run a C & S (culture & sensitivity) so the most appropriate antibiotic is being used.

There are many kitties here who have kidney problems. Many, many cats live a long time with renal issues. If Jr. Mint's kidneys are involved, it will mean a diet change and making sure he gets lots of fluids. If you can give insulin, you can give fluids. I wouldn't get ahead of yourself and think this is catastrophic. Clearly, his kidneys are producing urine. Let the vets figure out what the problem is and then take it from there.

Re: Another Update - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Angela, I hope that Jr. Mint will be feeling better this afternoon. Many prayers, healing vines and snowflakes are heading his way. Try to stay positive.

Re: Recent Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

I did what I said I would do, and that was to go and visit him. I did. I'm glad I did. When I got there, the vet came out from doing something, and I asked her if it was ok to go and see him. She said sure. I told her that I'll visit with him while she did the blood work. She told me that she'd already done it. I was dreading that moment. When I to see him, his little left leg was taped up because of the IV. The catheter was still inserted. He looked like crap. He was lethargic. Scared. They had, and still have, a heat lamp on him because the IV fluids would make him chilled. The vet arrived to his cage. She had the paperwork for the blood work for his kidneys and liver. All was good. Slightly elevated in spots, otherwise good. No signs of damage. She turned off the lamp, and moved it aside so that I can have access to his handsome self. She suggested that I mess with him for a bit, and see if he'll respond. I had every intention of doing so. He hadn't touched his food at all. I took a bit on my finger, opened up his mouth, and dropped the food into his mouth. He ate it. I did it again, and he ate it. 3rd time he decided to lick it off my fingers. I'm glad. He ate what they gave him. All of it, short of licking the bowl clean. I asked the vet for a bit more. She gave me the can. I dug my fingers into it, replenished his little bowl, and fed him from the can some more. I didn't overfeed him as I didn't want him throwing up. At one time, he growled. I guess the pain or something. I talked to him, petted him, did what I would normally do when he was at home. He started doing his trademark pussy footing (or kneading), even with the paw that had the IV in it. That's my lil man!!! :) I stayed there for about 45 minutes. I made sure he ate. I told him he is a fighter. He'll make it. He did his pussy footing thing again. :) I told him that I'll be back tomorrow to visit him and make sure he ate. I told him that I loved him very much. I left happy. Alone, but happy.

I go visit him tomorrow afternoon. I'm looking forward to it. :)

I'm so happy that you got to visit him and that he seems to be doing a bit better tonight.

Gotta love it when kitties get happy feet.
So glad to hear he responded to you like that.

Me too. Glad you went to see him and glad the news is a bit better. We call it 'treading' when they do that! Nice!

Re: Recent Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

I'm counting the hours to when I can see my lil boy again. Hopefully, today he'll have improved some more. Hopefully, they'll have removed the catheter this morning, and he'll be urinating on his own.

Re: Recent Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Hope so too! All the very best for today, rooting for you and little Mint!

Re: Recent Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Thankyou, Perry. I need all the prayers and healing vines that anyone can provide for him. In the meantime, I'm going to be researching some foods for him. I may simply put him on the Friskies wet T&G flavor, and be done with it. They want to put him on Hills Prescription Diet A/D formula, I think. I'm trying to steer clear of the Hills brand foods if at all possible. Expensive, and in my opinion, not really all that good for cats.

Re: Recent Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Right, what is it with Vets and these expensive prescription foods, that turn out to be full of carbs and junk? Anyhow it'll be good to have something to keep you busy until it's time to go visit him. Take care today and take our very best thoughts with you...

Re: Recent Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

I hope Jr. Mint is so much better today that you can take him home. Sending healing vines and prayers.

Re: Recent Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Thank you, Ele. I"ll know more when I visit with him this afternoon. Got the ok from the vet to bring some boiled chicken pieces with me as a treat. Something from home.

Re: Recent Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

I love "happy feet!" It's so good to hear that Jr. Mint is responding and eating for you!!

I think the Hills' A/D is calorie intensive. It may not be the best quality of food, but you might want to think about using it while Jr's in the hospital and a day or two later since he hasn't been eating well.

Re: Friday Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Sienne, I think they want to put him on the C/D version. The A/D is a starter for him to get back into eating.

Yesterday, (Friday), he was pissy with everyone, including me. He growled, and hissed. Thankfully, though, he didn't strike out. They had clipped his front claws so that nobody would get scratched by him. I spent almost 2 hours with him yesterday, talking to him, petting him, making him eat, and then he'd eat the food from my hand. He ate what they had put in his dish yesterday morning, but according to the vet, he didn't eat overnight. However, I managed to get almost a full can of food into him while I was there. For the first part of the feeding session, he'd eat what was in his dish, and then a bit more from the can. After a bit, he'd kind of rest. So, I fed him a bit about every 5 minutes by prying open his jaw and dropping a bit into his mouth. After doing this for some time, he decided that he did want more, so I scooped some more up onto my fingers, and he licked it off. By the time he was done, nearly a full can was almost gone. I've saved the rest in their fridge and asked the vet if she wants him to clean that up the next morning, and start a fresh can when the first one's empty. She agreed. I told her that I dont' like wasting food. LOL Before I left, he started cleaning his right leg where they had shaved it for withdrawal of blood, and then he started cleaning towards his paw on his fur. He did move around a bit in the cage when I was there, but being a big cat in a small place he wasn't able to move around much.

He wasn't interested in the chicken bits. I think I'll make fresh up, and bring him some tomorrow.

They still have the catheter in him as there's still a bit of blood in the urine. She's going to see how he's doing today, and maybe he'll have that removed. The IV bag... There was 1/3 left in the afternoon when I got there. That's the first bag. Hopefully, the only one, but we'll have to see how he does. That bag lasted from Thursday morning, until probably overnight. I won't know how things are until I go see him this morning. Unfortunately, he'll be staying the weekend, which I had feeling would happen. I asked her about Sunday since they're closed to the public. I asked if we can make arrangements for me to come here Sunday morning to feed him because he won't eat for anyone else, I'm sure. She's going to call me Sunday morning at 9, and she'll come and clean out the cages while I feed him.

I have no doubt that I'll be able to get him to eat again today, if he hasn't eaten anything overnight. In my opinion, if he didn't want to make it, he wouldn't eat. If he was ready to give up on living, he wouldn't eat. He would've gone downhill the moment I took him to the vet.

I'll update later when I get back from my errands. Thank you for your continued thoughts, healing vines, and prayers for my Jr. Mint. He's my baby, and he'll forever be my baby.

Re: Friday Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Hi Angela, It's really good that Jr. Mint is eating. That's a great sign. I hope that everything will go as scheduled and that you will be able to see him on Sunday and entice him to eat more. It's probably best that they are going to keep him over the weekend. Stay positive! Lots more healing vines and snowflakes are heading your way. (It's actually snowing here this morning!)

Re: Friday Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Thank you, Ella. I'm thinking that they'll allow me to go there tomorrow morning to feed him. I highly doubt that he'll eat for anyone else. I'm determined to make my cat get better, and the sooner the better. I'll be going there at least once a day to make him eat until he comes home.

Re: Friday Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Hopefully a few days of fluids and some good antibiotics will get him feeling much better soon! Sounds like he is already feeling a bit better.

Re: Friday Update on Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

Amanda, I think so, too. Preening is a good sign, for sure. Eating as much as he did is another good sign. :) He's a little fighter, my boy. :) Go Jr. Mint! :)

Amen to all that! Come on Mr Minty boy, turn that corner!!!

(( Angela ))

That's so great that she'll let you come in on Sunday like that. The eating, pussy footing, even the bloodwork sounds like things are looking up. Does he have something with him with your scent on it, like a shirt? Sometimes that helps comfort them.

Re: He's Home!!!! - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

This morning, I left here about 10:10 a.m., and arrived at the vet's office at about 10:30. I went straight back there, and straight to his cage. He recognized me, and at one time, started growling, which only turned into a yawn. Cute lil guy! I pulled out a little toy that I had thought to bring with me because it had the scent of home on it. He sniffed it and started rubbing on it. He remembers it.

I saw the vet, and she told me that I could take him home today. I was elated. I did ask her how his urine was, and she said that it was good enough for him to go home, but she'll have to remove the catheter. Apparently, he peed in the box in his cage, but he pooped outside the box. He's a fairly large cat, and the cage was bit small for him. His back end had cramped up a bit, so he's a bit stiff, but he can get in and out of the boxes here. Thank goodness.

She asked if I had a carrier, and I told her that I would have to run home to get it, which is about 15 minutes away. She let me borrow one, and I'll take it back when I take him in for a checkup on Monday. She gave me some Predisolone (an anti-inflammatory pill) to give to him once a day for the inflammation. He'll still be on Clavamox until those are gone (7 days). When I got him home, of course he smelled of his own urine. I got a bucket with warm water, and some Dawn antibacterial soap, and tried to clean him off as best as I could. To no avail. So, hubby cleaned out one of the kitchen sinks, filled it with warm water, and put some of the Dawn in it. Filled up the other sink for rinse water. We inserted Jr. Mint into the soapy water, and quickly got him as clean as we could. The water was filthy when we were done. He was placed into the warm rinse water, and again it too was filthy. However, he was a bit cleaner than before. We towel dried him as best as we could, and I placed him on clean towels on the floor in the sun. He loved the sun, and started to dry himself off. I had to make a trip to the store, but when I came back, DH told me that Jr. Mint was in the back room. I found him, laying next to one of the boxes. I looked in the box, and there was a small pee clump. Good boy! I went outside to do some chores, came back in, and DH told me that he did it again. :) A poop in one box, and a pee clump in the other. VERY good boy! :)

The only thing I need to keep a watch out for if he's starting vomit, which means that he's stopped up. IF that happens, I'm to call her. She's on call this weekend.

Oh, he did drink a fair amount of water when he got home, and he ate 1/4 can of the food that was given to him. I'll be feeding him again shortly, when the others get fed. I think he's going to make a full recovery. The only thing that'll change, obviously, is his diet. That's fine with me, because I don't want to go through this again.

Re: He's Home!!!! - Blackie's Son, Jr. Mint (UTI Infection)

That's so great Angela! So glad to hear he's home where you can keep an eye on him!
