Hello guys <3 My mom this morning poked Fluffy's used needle (she already injected the insulin into him) but she's worried about getting some disease from our cat?

She's been to the doctor and they were worried "we'll we don't know what you cat has" so they prescribed antibiotics to prevent toxoplasmosis (I don't even think Fluffy has any diseases that can be transmitted?)

On his recent doctor visit there was a possible small infection of the kidneys, and she's worried she'll get some disease from that?

We've had our cat for 16 years, he's never had any infections or diseases but we don't know if something could have happened recently.

Anyways she's taking Fluffy for a blood test to see if there's anything that she can get sick from. :/

I seriously doubt that there is anything she will catch from him, from a needle prick. I have stabbed myself many times with used lancets and needles. If he has an infection in his kidneys - which sounds pretty serious, for Fluffy - I don't think she can catch that from him, and even if she could the ABs should cover it!

Thank you so much @Squalliesmom and @Larry and Kitties <3 :p That should help assure her. I just hope the antibiotics don't harm her (I'm very much a skeptic on pharmaceuticals)

Fluffy from his last bloodwork about several weeks ago said there was a suspected infection, but the doctor gave Fluffy antibiotics which said should rid of it for two weeks but I believe he's getting bloodwork today so maybe we'll see if it went away, fingers crossed!

I can't believe she could catch anything from your cat. I am immunosuppresed and I can catch anything I might be exposed to, I haven't caught anything from all the pokes I've had.

That's good news! Thank you! From all I read, I hadn't heard anyone contract any disease from their cat even if they accidentally poked used needles into themselves :O Hopefully I can show my mom this and she'll feel more at ease.

Thank you so much for your encouraging replies :bighug::bighug::bighug:<3 !! Well my mom won't answer my calls or texts about Fluffy, and she's upset she has to take antibiotics as a precaution for toxoplasmosis which I think is a bit exaggerated... I have no idea what's going on urggg :banghead:

I bet she's not even doing the blood tests anymore, and I still don't know how Fluffy is doing or when or how low his nadir is... I'm this close to finding a cat friendly apartment and bringing my poor cat with me :( or just sneaking him in...

Can you get toxoplasmosis from a cat scratch?
It is extremely unlikely that you would pick up toxoplasmosis by petting your cat or being scratched or bitten by your cat, because the organism is not spread by the fur or saliva. You CAN, however, pick up toxoplasmosis by eating undercooked infected meat, particularly lamb and pork."

If you can't get it from a direct scratch or even bite then a little prick from a needle is not going to do it either :D

I did it once and asked my vet..they said it happens there ALL THE TIME. Vets and techs have all done the same thing. Nothing to worry about.
