Molly: AMPS **HI** - (URGENT) - CURRENTLY AT VET

Hi, everyone! It's been awhile since I've posted here. Long story short, I had complications from my surgery and developed an infection. I've started a new 2024 spreadsheet as my S.O. tested and dosed Molly while I was sick but couldn't put the data in the spreadsheet. (He did contact me before dosing to ensure she was okay to get her insulin).

Today, I'm finally back to my regular self and back to testing and dosing Molly myself.

Her AMPS showed a "HI" reading, and I'm assuming that's OVER 600!!! I'm extremely worried about her right now. I gave her .75u Lantus instead of her usual .50 . She's currently laying next to the water bowl, and she is extremely lethargic. She doesn't want to eat right now and I'm fearful of DKA. I'm going to retest her at +1. What else can I do for her right now? Is it possible her insulin has gone bad?

I cannot see your SS.
Can you test her for ketones? You can use a stick but she needs to pee for that. Does she have a history of ketones?
You should try to make her drink and eat, can you try with a syringe? Try water first and maybe mix some food in it so it is liquid and will go in the syringe.
I will tag more experienced members who can help you better than me:
@Marje and Gracie
@Bandit's Mom
@Suzanne & Darcy
@tiffmaxee
@Angela & Cleo
Can you help Molly?

Please take her to the vet. After that, if you can PM me, I need to get her SS back where we can all see it.

Update 1:40 PM: Vet has taken Molly to the back to run vitals and draw blood and whatnot. I requested that they test for ketones as well. He seemed kind of annoyed that I had her on .50u 2x a day instead of what he prescribed at DX (1u 2x a day). I explained to him why and how I came to dose her at .50u (thankful for everyone here). Waiting for him to come back with the next steps.

Update: 2:10 PM She's been admitted as CRITICAL. Her BS was 686, BUN was 114 and Phos was 11. He said her kidneys are in overdrive today, said she's also extremely dehydrated despite constantly drinking water, and one of her liver enzymes are elevated as well. He said his biggest worry right now is the blood sugar and the kidneys. He gave her a full unit of insulin on top of the .75u I gave her this morning. He said the next 24 hours will let us know if she will pull through or if she needs more care. I'm so scared right now. I'm so so scared.

Oh, Bri, I’m praying that your beautiful Molly will recover. Will she be getting round the clock care (are they open 24 hours?) Or will you have to move her to an ER facility? Did he say anything about her other electrolytes? Or ketones? The IV fluids should help her a lot. Elevated liver enzymes aren’t really a concern unless they’re about triple the upper end of the reference range. I understand how frightening this is. Hugs. We are all pulling for your Molly!

Bri

The BUN and phosphorus are related to the kidney issues and the P is really high. It will make her feel horrible. I would say that is a much bigger issue than her BG which can be brought down with fast acting insulins that they can use at the same time as the lantus if they know how. Insofar as the liver enzymes, it depends on which one is elevated but, for example, if the ALT was even in the 300s, that is still considered mild.

Sending many, many healing vines and prayers for your beautiful girl. I’m so glad you took her to the vet. I’m sorry I didn’t have time to post more this morning but as soon as I saw what you wrote, I knew she needed to be at the vet immediately.

Bri, how is Molly doing today? I'm thinking about you both, I hope she's sterating to feel better :bighug::bighug::bighug:
I feel so bad that I did not tell you to go to the vet as soon as I read your post, re-reading it now., it seems obvious. I am glad Marje was there and more reactive than me!
