mocha's ears

Ok, many of you had input on mocha's ears, when I thought it was ear mites .. It turned out to be a bacteria infection, in both ears. Tomorrow will be one week since we started drops (steroid free ones). The vet told me we should notice an improvement in just a few dyas, and that she would not need to be back for a check up. We were told by the vet, and on the back of the bottle, to NOT clean out her ears, so we haven't.

Mocha has stopped folding her ears down and shaking her head and turning it to the side and generally seems less bothered by them. But when we look in them, we can see that there is still the brown gunk in there, just now it seems more spread out, like the drops broke it all up, and as she was shaking her head on occasion, it splattered in chunks throughout her ears? It's very hard to explain, but it does look different.

I'm not sure if the infection is gone, and this is the crud that is left, and if so, what should we do about it? Or does this mean the infection is still present since there is brown gunk in her ears still? Would the drops totally dissolve the brown gunk? Is that the look we were hoping for?

I haven't called the vet yet, since I wanted to know what you all think first .. plus it's another costly visit even for a "check up"

Any advice is always appreciated!

I assume the admonition to not remove the gunk is to avoid removing
the medicine along with the gunk.

I think (just my opinion) you could gently clean the outer-most folds of the ear.

The remaining gunk should work its way from the inner ear to the outer folds,
eventually.

I would be inclined to call the vet, also. And possibly keep using the medicine
until it's all gone.

Thanks you guys. Maybe we will try using some mineral oil tonight, just in the upper ear area where the gunk has stunk.

Maybe I'll call the vet tomorrow, to see what they say we should do .. the vet did say if these drops don't work, we might have to try others. I'm assuming she meant ones with steroids in them. I really think these drops are working, because she doesn't seem bugged by her ears at this point .. I'm just not sure about the brown gunk.

I see nothing wrong with using a cotton ball cleaning out the outer er. I would not use a q-tip or similar to try to clean out the inner ear. Just be careful not to push the gun back into the ear.

If the medication Mocha is on is Zymox, you are not supposed to clean the ears before or during the treatment because Zymox contains enzymes, and the junk in the ears actually helps with the enzymatic reaction. It's probably fine to wipe out the junk that is leaking out, but I wouldn't go into the ear too far until the treatment is completed.

Thanks everyone .. We are going to try wiping out her upper ear area tonight ... not down in the canal where there is still some brown gunk .. but up near the top, in the flappy area :-D
