Hi everyone! I know I've been lax the last few weeks about getting to condos but my neighbor is knocking on my door each morning asking me to walk with her and by the time I get back and showered and about my day, sometimes the time just slips away.

Well today is mochas 4 month OTJ annifursary and she is doing wonderful!

Last few weeks have been rough, but she's been a trooper with excellent number's through it all .. She had a vet visit for her eye, which was giving off lots of wet eye boogies so she went on AB's for a week and artificial tears for a month (still do that occasionally, as a schirmer test revealed she suffers from dry eyes)

Once that cleared up me and peter headed off on our first vacation in nearly two years. I was a nervous wreck leaving my girls, but knew my mom would take good care of them, and she did.

We came home after four day's to find mocha battling what we thought were ear mites (never had them before) we waited a week trying out ear mite meds from wal mart but with no improvement another vet visit was in order where she was diagnosed as having bacteria infections in both ears and went on more AB's for another week. Thankfully within days we noticed an improvement in the way she was twitching her ear and by the time the meds were done, she was back to 100%!

She still get's her beauty regimen in the morning with q tips washing her little nose and cheeks .. you can hear her purring throughout the house when it's beauty time ..

The vet called me yesterday, letting me know she received a response from a professor at Michigan State University about mocha. The vet feels as though mocha's numbers are unusually low, and wanted to get some more opinions on the matter. Each time we took mocha in she let us know she hadn't heard anything yet, and was trying a few more places. I let it be, as I'm very pleased with mocha's numbers. The phone call yesterday was just a few questions that this professor had, mainly about how soon we noticed a decrease in mocha's urine output and excessive drinking. I was surprised she called at all and didn't think about it until afterwards, but if she calls back I'm going to ask what this professor thought of mocha's numbers.

Overall, mocha is a happy, healthy girl who is currently conked out in twix's basket with a fan blowing on her ...

:RAHCAT Happy 4 month OTJ, Mocha!
How encouraging that she has kept wonderful #s despite Vet visits & other health issues! Happy to hear all is resolved & well in your world. It is wonderful that you & Peter got away for a few days. Feline Diabetes makes me miss that the most.. just getting away.. out of town. I hope your summer is going well & that morning walks are refreshing. Thank you for checking in & continuing to support everyone. Enjoy your day, Devon!

Congratulations! Has it really been 4 months already?
I love that you and Peter finally were able to take a vacation.

Let us know if and what you (and your vet) learn what the professor thinks about Mocha's lower numbers.
It is good that he seems to be thinking about Mocha... maybe he is researching it.

P.S. Thanks for visiting BigMac's party. :-D

Despite some bumps in the road, what a lovely report! I was just thinking about Mocha and her eye issues the other day. I'm glad to hear it's under control!

I'm also curious to hear what the professor thinks about Mocha's numbers...hopefully you'll get more info on that. I always find it "interesting" when vets are investigating more info from members of this group. At least we've got some of them thinking, as opposed to running completely on autopilot!

Have a wonderful day!!

Amy

Happy 4 Month Annifursary Mocha!!!!

I always love hearing Mocha stories, especially her beauty routine stories. So that's how she stays so beautiful huh? Maybe i'll have to try out the Qtip routine too.

At least the vetty visits aren't for anything too major and its great to hear she's feeling well.

Have a great day Mocha and Devon!!!

Happy 4 month annifursary Mocha - congrats to the beans too. I can't believe that it has been 4 months. I think it's great that you guys were finally able to take a vacation. I suppose all of us know what it is like when you can't really go anywhere... it's been three years for us. I keep thinking that we should just take Mannie with us, but wow - I know it would stress him out more than it would do him any good. He just hates traveling of any sort. Anywyas - I am glad you got to go!! AWESOME!

I too want to thank you for continuing to visit Mannie. The support is wonderful, and I am more than grateful!

It sounds like Mocha has been though a few things, but it is good to read she has recovered from it all, and doing well now. Amazing that she has held her BG in line throughout them all. very nice!

I too would be interested in what the professor etc thought about mocha's numbers... I find it interesting when the vets say these numbers are too low... I test my other cats, and they always post in the 60-80 range. It's the norm...

4 MONTHS ALREADY!!! REALLY!!!! HARD TO BELIEVE!!!! YAY for MOCHA AND DEVON AND OF COURSE PETER!!! YOU GUYS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB!!! :dizcat
Devon,
thanks for visiting our condo and for the thoughts and prayers for Rocket....much much appreciated!

What a great report.

Congratulations Devon to you and Mocha, and thanks for visiting Maggie and me, too. One thought about your Vet thinking Mocha's numbers are low. Is your Vet using the animal meter (AlphaTrak)? The numbers using the human meter are about 25-30 points lower than the animal meter. For instance, this morning I had a 199 on the animal meter, and a 144 on the Relion Micro. I'd be interested, too, in what the Vet learns. It's encouraging she's taking an interest in your home testing, as I remember when you dropped off the ss and other info. Give Mocha some scritches from me and Maggie. We love you Mocha.

Oh my goodness, has it been 4 months already?!!! Congratulations!! I know that it was a long and hard journey to get Mocha to where she is and you and Peter certainly deserved a wonderful vacation. Glad you were able to get away. I hope Mocha's eyes and ears clear up and that things continue to go well.

Definitely interesting about the vets worrying about the low numbers. Makes no sense since so many non-diabetic cats consistently are that low.

Thank you also for stopping by and visiting Simon's condo. The support means so much to me!

Thanks everyone!

After I dropped off her SS numbers to the vet, they told me they were worried about how low they were .. that's when I asked if they were using a feline meter vs a human meter .. they told me there should not be any difference .. I of course stated that from my understanding on the diabetes board there could be a definite difference ... I don't think they believed me, but hard to say ..

The way my vet is going about this is unusual .. I never asked her to ask around for other opinions, and while she is "ok" with me taking mocha off insulin (even though it was time, and she apparently was ready) she is very worried about how low mocha always is .. She called her "weird" with her unusually low numbers ... Not sure what she wants me to do .. but I'm not giving mocha a sugar cube to suck on! :o

I had no idea she was going to fax mocha's numbers around, this is something she decided to do on her own ..

She did tell me on the phone that the professor at MSU told her "mocha tried diabetes, got tired of it, and got rid of it" Well, if only it was that easy, right!

that's very interesting about the vet/low numbers obsession. surely she's just in the range of other non-diabetic cats?

i also can't believe it's been 4 months. good grief how fast that's gone! seems like it just happened. Great news that mocha has continued to do well, though. you are such a sweetheart to keep supporting everyone still on the insulin habit. i also appreciate how encouraging you are and have often thought about there being no condo to talk back to you! it's just really nice that you've stayed around - and it looks like i'm not the only one who appreciates it!

have a super day, devon!

Wow - can't believe it has been 4 months....already!!!!!! I remember our first vacation when Zoe went OTJ the first time....I called our petsitter EVERY day.....I would have called 2 or 3 times a day, but I was afraid my petsitter would hang up.

Sounds like Mocha is doing really well - congratulations to all of you. Interesting about your vet being concerned about the low numbers, our vet worried about it too with Zoe when she went OTJ.....but after seeing her and seeing how well she was doing, she didn't do much about it......

Her numbers look normal to me.

Thanks for the WCR. Congratulations Mocha on your 4 Month OTJ!!!!

How did some of these vets ever get through science. I think it would be very interesting if the vet were able to get BG data on most of the cats that are seen in the office. Aside from vet stress elevating numbers, what is it about Mocha's numbers that is considered "low." I bet if you averaged Mocha's numbers over the 2 weeks of her OTJ trial, they are NORMAL, non FD numbers. What does your vet view as normal? Yeesh!

Silly vets aside, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I'm so happy to hear that you and Peter have taken some time for yourselves and that Mocha behaved (ear infection notwithstanding). What's very impressive is that despite the eye goop and the ear goop, her numbers stayed where they should. Please ask Mocha to keep up the good work!

so glad to hear Mocha is doing well and such a trooper taking her ABs and going thru vet visits.

How amazing is it that you got to go on vacation, good for you and Peter!

Hi guys,
congratulations Mocha on the big 4 months!
And many many more!
Sounds like she is doing very well. cat_pet_icon

Happy 4 Month Annifursary! I agree, it seems like last week! I'm so glad you got a chance to get away together. We keep dreaming!

Thank you for visiting Tess so often, seeing you there is always a great encouragement. 'As for the vet, what does he think is normal!

Hi Devon, Peter, and MOCHA!! Congrats, Mocha, on your 4-month anniversary! This is so cool! It is wonderful that you got to take your vacation and that Mocha was fine with it. Too bad about the infection, but she cleared it very quickly. Interesting about your vet all of a sudden taking such an interest in Mocha's numbers. Did she/he do that when Mocha was on the juice?

Thanks, so much, Devon, for visiting Rusty's condo so often and for your support. It means a great deal to us.
Here's to MONTH 5!! drinking24 drinking24 drinking24

CONGRATS MOCHA ON YOUR ANNIFURSARY!!!!!

Glad things are going better with her eyes and ears. SCOFF to the vet....TOO LOW????

I think that the saying should be Mocha tried diabetes and Peter and Devon whooped the hell out of it - It was thru your hard work that Mocha is where she is . I hope she stays there. Congrates on a vaca - it is very hard to cut the ties but I am glad you have done it. Enjoy!

Thanks again everyone!

As far as when mocha was on insulin, we were seeing a different vet .. the practice has four clinics, and they rotate out at each clinic .. well, over time the vet we had been seeing locally chose to stay and work at a different clinic and the local one in town that we go to (because it is so close) brought in this new younger vet ..

She had actually never seen mocha or her numbers, but when we took twix in for eating a lily petal we got talking about mocha .. at the time she thought she seemed "way to low" to be surfing in the 60-70 range .. and then once mocha went OTJ we took in her SS and some other articles .. the vet ended up calling and asking questions, mainly concerned with us "pushing" mocha to be that low .. I told her we didn't do anything other then adjusting the insulin when it needed to be adjusted .. and since then, each time we've taken her to the vet the vet always informs us she is worried about how "low" she is, and that she is calling around to other practices/MSU to get more opinions on the matter.

In my own opinion, I don't think the vet is checking all this out because she is interested in mocha being OTJ or researching more on FD, I think she is researching this probably because it was all of US who got mocha OTJ .. not a clinic, not a vet, not her .. you know? But again, that is just my opinion.

HAPPY HAPPY 4 MONTH, MIZ MJ LATTE!!!

I agree. . Fragile egos some vets have. . .

Ooohhh Devon- this is great to hear. You worked so hard with Mocha and she got there. Yay!!!
And that vet???? Makes me sick. How did you keep your cool? I'm so sick of dealing with egotistical vets.
Great job with Mocha. Her numbers are great.

Thanks guys! Traci, thankfully mocha is a relatively healthy kitty and doesn't see her vet very often .. I was able to stay cool on the outside by thinking of all the errands I needed to run once I was done with her  Just in one ear, out the other!

Hi, Devon - congrats on a great four months!

I would like to ask you about Mocha's ear situation. Kitty has had the same thing! In fact, he scratched so badly he had a skin bleed, medications, a real mess. The cause, it appears, was ear bacteria.

I was wondering what kind of antibiotic you gave Mocha. Kitty got a shot of the convenia, but that didn't clear it up completely. Then we used an otic drop WITHOUT hydrocortisone, which isn't that easy to find. (We used Zymox.) Kitty isn't scratching, but he does still shake his head. I'd love to help him get rid of it completely, as Mocha has.

So glad you and Peter got a chance to go away. I think I remember a long time ago you posted once about how you thought you might never get a vacation again. I'm sure you enjoyed every second of it!

Congratulations on 4 months OTJ.

I would ask tell the vet that you are curious as to how many non-diabetic cats she has tested. I bet not many if any at all.

I am so glad that you and Peter could go on vacation and have someone you trust to stay with the kitties. :-D

:RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :thumbupCongratulations Mocha, Devon and Peter!!! 4 months, how awesome is that!!! Seems like Ms. Mocha is enjoying her time at the falls....Hip Hip Horray!!!! :thumbup :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

I'm a little bit late on the congratulations...sorry

Oops, I posted in the wrong window.

Was responding to another thread in wrong place.

This is the place to say ROCK ON MOCHA!.

I should probably raise chickens, feed on holistic food, slaughter, pluck, cook and grind myself. Then I know Kitty's food trail will be clean. Yes, that's a joke.

I would not be surprised if someone on this board actually did that for their cats! ;-)

CONGRATULATIONS ON MOCHA'S 4 MONTH ANNIFURSARY!!! drinking24 drinking24

Time sure does fly! Sounds like you've got the vet visit's behind you and Mocha's doing great! Glad you had a good vacation. Enjoy the rest of your summer Devon. Thanks for the great update on Mocha. Couldn't be better.
