Our cat is now completely on a wet food diet. We switched him in order to help him lose weight and it has really helped. Was wondering if anyone mixes in some dry food as well? We are concerned about his teeth. Also, would like to have the option of dry food for when we are away overnight (currently we feed him 3 times per day and we are not supposed to leave the wet food out for more then 4 hours). Advice would be appreciated.....

There are a few who sprinkle some dry on top just to get their cats to eat.
Dry food for the teeth is now a debunked myth. Some vets still think that way. You could learn how to brush your cats teeth by watching videos
on youtube.
Who told you not to leave the wet food out for more than 4 hours?
Are you in a hot climate?
when I add water, and even make a little moat around the food, it stays moist sometimes up to 12 hours. ( I am in a cooler climate)
it's raw that can't be left out for long.

The other possibility is you could get a timed feeder. You can freeze the food, and put it in the time and it thaws out by the time it
is presented to your cat.

Adding dry to wet will really increase the carbs, which in turn will increase the blood sugar. Dry food only is totally old school thinking. But a solution might involve teaching a friend how to cre for your diabetic baby. Then you would be more comfortable to leave you kitty...and the schedule will not be disturbed. Change of scedule, you abscence cane also lead to elevating the blood sugar. Try a little help from a friend. Good luck from ajen and stewey

We leave wet food in the feeders for up to 24hrs without a problem. I've never had wet food go bad.

Commercial dry food these days is too small to be of any benefit to cats' teeth, they swallow most of it without even a single bite. If you have ever bought the prescription oral care cat food you will find it is over 1/2 inch squared, significantly larger, to make the cat actually bite and chew on something. Oral care such as brushing and routine dental cleanings is better for cats dental hygiene than giving them pea sized starchy dry food to eat. You can also give them a large piece of raw meat to chew on to help their teeth.
If you do decide to give dry food, Young Again Zero Carb and EVO Cat and Kitten are two of the lower carb dry foods out there.

Dry food doesn't help clean teeth. It's all a marketing scheme. Go to your vet and have them clean your cat's teeth.

Thanks for the great information. Does anyone else leave dry food when you need to be away for 24 hours but usually feed wet?

Since most of us here have diabetic cats, if we have to be gone, we hire vet techs or petsitters to come in and take care of our cats

George, you will want to have someone watch your cat who knows how to take care of them. I wouldn't recommend leaving a diabetic cat alone for that long.

I am currently feeding Fancy Feast and Young Again dry with no ill effect other than they seem to eat less food overall. If you're administering insulin you can't really leave your buddy alone for that long, a vet tech could come by and test, inject and feed while you're gone.
