Well, I'm happy to report that the vet visit went really well. The vet took a look at his spreadsheet & agreed with me that Prozinc was not working well for Mittens & that he was just too bouncy & unpredictable with it. She did bloodwork and everything came back normal (she said that she was actually surprised at that considering the high numbers that he's had for so long). She gave me a prescription for Lantus and advised me to start using that tomorrow morning. She mentioned something about feeding him the Purina canned DM but I'm glad that I read here that that's not necessary (otherwise I would have bought cases of it) .

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone (especially Sue) for your help here in the PZI forum...without you all I would have been completely lost. I'll drop in to provide an update on Mittens every now & then and to see how all the PZI kitties are doing...paws crossed the Lantus works for Mittens!

Hurray! It is wonderful your vet would consider your data and be willing to make a change. We'll be watching to see how Mittens does. Paws crossed it works better for him!

Lyndsey, while we will miss you and Mittens, I agree with Sue. You have a vet that LISTENS! An amazing thing for sure. Best of luck to Mittens on Lantus and definitely drop by and let us know how you are both doing! Happy Holidays!

We will miss you all too! Although I've only been here since August, the PZI forum will always be our first "home" here at FDMB. I cannot say thank you enough to everyone in this forum holding my hand and guiding us through the overwhelming process of caring for a diabetic cat. I have truly learned so much here.

Have a happy & safe holiday!

Good luck with Lantus!

The starting dose for Lantus is calculated as
lower of current or ideal weight in Kilograms (= pounds/2.2)
multiplied by 0.25
rounded down to the nearest quarter unit.

Also, be as diligent about shooting exactly 12 hours apart as you can, due to the overlap, aka depot effect. This takes roughly 3-5 days to stabilize
Never increase based on pre-shots.

Read the stickies!!!
