Missy update Insulin on hold for now

Vet appointment went well. Missy's sugar was 253, down from 415 1 weeks ago with dietary tweaks to just the classic FF flavors and our other freeze dried and instinct canned. We had cut the Pred dose last week as well and thanks to all you I had stopped the Lactulose.

Also returned the Hills food See him next week for recheck, but for now as it had dropped so just on tweaks he wants to hold off insulin for now. I did find out that he does use lantus, and would initially start her on just once a day dose of 1 unit, but not yet. Doing some cheering here on her official 18th birthday.

He had also said to use Miralax with her. Worked one day but to be fair she had not finished food the second time. He said some need to use it twice a day. Didn't ask him as hopefully Miralax will be enough, and didnt think til after, but can a little bit of canned pumpkin be used? (pie filling plain pumpkin unsweetened of course)

Oh and wasn't fasting glucose even, she had eaten earlier and just before we went.

I'd stick with the miralax, pumpkin has carbs and can mess with blood pressure in felines. It's a shame you don't already have the insulin, the numbers are still diabetic even though the food has helped, and cats just seem to do better with the diet change and insulin then trying to wait and hope they self regulate.

I question the proposed 1 unit of Lantus 1X day. No insulin lasts 24 hours except when a cat's healthy pancreas is making it continually. Do you know why your vet might recommend it just once a day? My Pudge (he's almost officially OTJ) used ProZinc bid or tid, so I don't know Lantus, but 1X a day does not make sense...

Re Miralax, a vet on this forum recommended starting it with 1/8 tsp 2X a day dissolved in water and placed in wet food. Going up to 1/4 tsp 2X a day, if needed. I have seen posts here that to make certain a kitty got the full dose a syringe or dropper was used. Some cats apparently refuse the food if Miralax is mixed in it.

Catannic okie doke not doing Pumpkin then, the one time of Miralax helped, so we will watch and continue, yes vet also said often Miralax needed twice a day, we are in learning start up work up phase Sophie, this is all totally new to us, she's never had elevated glucose before. As minimal tweaks dropped sugar vets being slow and cautious, to start just daily on basis of hypoglycemic reactions beng more dangerous and as she dropped by half without treatment other then stopping Laxatone, and limiting FF flavors. Lantus is generally bid also but to see her response.. We will see what BG and her liver labs are next week.

If cat is very sensitive to insulin, 1 unit all at once could still be too much.
It would be safer to do 1/2 unit every 12 hours and will probably work better for the cat.

There are syringes with half unit markings. These make it easier to measure small amounts ... though I'll note that clip on magnifiers to one's glasses help too!

I know, was going to ask about that dose if we were starting today, I was floored that he said lets hold off for now
Used to using 1/2 cc Insulin syringes from work.
Told him that actually wasn't stressed about doing shots of insulin so much as freaked about needing Hills as only food option. We do have to figure balance liver labs which is why taking Pred, but fact numbers dropped so in a week we want to check they don't rebound on own. He's very supportive, said they also work with a nutritionalist, if wanted a referral, for now step at a time, as she's older, quality also concern on my side.

And promise not to change name trying out skin here, my one online id has always been Purrson @-) but as writing for both of us right now..

I found that the 5/16", 3/10 cc (or mL) U-100 syringes work great in the 30 gauge or higher. WalMart carries them, as do our shopping partners (click on link above).
