My non-diabetic, Henry, never returned home Sunday night. I figured I'd share what I've done so far to find him in case anyone else suffers this unfortunate experience.

He's not micro-chipped (yet) but he has (had) a collar and a tag. I held out on getting him chipped when I got him fixed a few months ago because we have a few different chips and different readers for those chips used in my area and I wanted to make sure I was getting the right chip put in for my area (instead of shooting him full of 4 different chips). This is what happens when you wait. (Same thing with Pet Insurance; I held off getting Michelangelo pet insurance and he ends up with diabetes at 6 months old. ohmygod_smile )

I spent the first day waiting to see if he'd return home on his own and knocking door-to-door, asking neighbors, and walking around calling for him and looking for him. I should have also used that first day for "busy work," i.e. calling around to various shelters and to the local police department (non-emergency number) who are often in charge of Animal Control. I didn't realize there were so many different numbers I would need to call to find out where he might have been taken depending on the area he was found in or if he was dropped off somewhere.

I discovered there are two "central sites" in my immediate area for processing. The one closest to my work is closed on Tuesdays and I didn't realize that when I went into work this morning. I was also surprised that it's common practice and half the places around here are closed on Tuesdays and some are even closed on Mondays (doesn't help that Henry went missing on a Sunday night).

On my lunch, I drove back home and stopped by the nearest (and most likely) humane society that Henry might have ended up. I'm extremely lucky in that where I live, they keep really good records and logs of all the animals they encounter, from injured (or worse) on the side of the road to being picked up or dropped off and they let me take a look at their intake logs (last update had been 15 minutes before I walked in the door). They were really sympathetic and said they'd keep an eye out for him and he'd be easy to spot because of his unique B/W coloring (i.e. only his chin is white). They said if he's not trapped somewhere (lots of people going on vacation right now because of school letting out), he was most likely taken in by someone, especially since he's under a year old and has such unique coloring. In that case, the fact that I'm offering a reward will increase the chances that whoever took him in might give him back for the reward. Most importantly, they also gave me a sheet filled with all the other places in all of my county where he might have ended up if someone turned him in. This saved me a bunch of time from having to dig this info up online (or even in a phone book...do those things still exist?).

There's another "central site" not in my area, but it's the biggest one in the county and is usually the place where people drop off animals (vs. them being picked up by Animal Control). They have a "found pets" page that they update every half hour. So, every half hour, I've been clicking "refresh" on my browser. It's too far for me to get there in person today (already used my lunch to check the other shelter), but I'm going to try and see if one of my friends might be able to stop by during the day for me either today or tomorrow and physically look for me.

I printed up a "Missing" flyer and have personally handed it out to my neighbors who are home and will be doing another door-to-door after 5 pm when more of them get home from work (and I am finished working). I've also been taping up the flyers around my area (didn't get as many up as I'd like before I had to get back to work, but it's a start). One of my friends is currently out putting up some flyers for me and is going to drop them off at some of the local businesses around here (i.e. our neighborhood Starbucks, 7-Eleven, Circle K, grocery store, etc...). I have my brother and another friend who have offered to help me tonight with the door-to-door.

I just really want my Henry-Bear back home because it's breaking my heart doubly to not only have him gone but also to see Michelangelo searching desperately for him and missing Henry so much that he's even willingly sitting next to me (normally, that's too close to a human for Michelangelo's comfort).

Re: Missing Henry

You might be able to recruit a troop of Boy or Girl Scouts to help search, or other youth groups, to help with the search.

Fingers crossed.

My sister's cat went missing before a storm and stayed missing for another 2 days. My friend and I went walking through the woods calling for him. He heard what he thought was a cat and we proceeded to echo-locate Tigger. When we started going in circles, we looked ... UP. There he was, a good 50 feet up in the air ... on a branch semi-wedged in the crotch of the tree. He was so happy to see us he moved and both branch and cat fell to the ground. By some miracle, he was OK and bounded for home. A lot thinner and more tired, he seldom strayed far again.

Re: Missing Henry

Oh no!

I know how it is to have a cat to go missing. And that is an amazing amount of information that can help others as well. I didn't know that there were different micro-chipping types.

Here's hoping Henry finds his way home by himself or that you find him soon! nailbite_smile

Re: Missing Henry

So sorry to hear this. I hope you get your beautiful (and I mean beautiful cause he is gorgeous!!) Henry back soon! I remember how hard this was with my Oreo when he took off for 3 weeks! Apparently he was hanging out with another family three blocks away. Anyway, he did come home but I do remember! Hugs!!

You are doing everything possible to find him that for sure. My friends cat got out last December he was an indoor all white cat. She searched for him for 4 months, I even went over and helped her search a couple times. She was almost certain he had froze to death(Ohio winter).
Her and her husband even moved to another house in the mean time in another part of town, she never gave up. She would still go to the old neighborhood after work and walk around and talk to surrounding people in the area.
There were some old farm houses across the street from the development where he went missing so she stopped over there one day and asked the guy had he seen her cat, she carried a poster around with her. the guy said yes he thought he had been feeding it with his feral cats.
She called me screaming one day, I found him, I found him, this was 4 months later. So don`t give up and you will find him.
Also look very close to your house like under bushes and such, most often they get spooked and just really want to hide.

Re: Missing Henry

I was sitting outside with Michelangelo and Michelangelo kept poking around the backyard, looking for Henry. He'd turn, look at me, and give the most pitiful mewl and then continue wandering around the backyard as if he were lost himself.

I hear one of the neighbors somewhere on my block opening a door (common sound, except not usually during the day when everyone's working). About 30 seconds later, Michelangelo runs across the backyard to the other side and looks up at the fence. I start apologizing yet again to Michelangelo, "I'm sorry, Babe. I don't know where Henry--." Jingle-jingle goes the sound of Henry's collar, then "Meow!" I look up and there is Henry, jumping down into the backyard!!!!! :-D :-D :-D

There are not enough emoticons to describe my elation!

I prefer to think one of the neighbors left for a couple of days and came home to find Henry locked inside and let him out (vs. someone stealing him and then letting him go once they saw the "Missing" posters). One thing that supports this theory is that the second Henry came inside, he went straight to the water dish and started guzzling it down. I've never seen him drink out of the water dish in all the months I've owned him (he only has ever played in it). Then, he ate an entire can of Friskies.

He's home safe now and smurgling on my chest as I awkwardly try to type this with Michelangelo dancing around him (and across my keyboard) and sniffing him out, glad to have his BFF back again.

So glad to hear that Henry has been found again.

"There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home......."

Thank you everyone! He's now stocked away two full cans of Friskies! Wherever he's been, he certainly wasn't being fed! I won't be surprised if he up-chucks some of it from eating too much. And he's been talking, talking, talking! He rarely meows, much less talks. I figure he's trying to tell me all about his 2-day adventure on the hard streets of suburban Orange County. He doesn't even want to let me out of his sight!

In other news, my brother's girlfriend stopped at a feed store across the freeway from where we live to drop off a poster and saw they had some bunnies for rescue available. My brother and his girlfriend are now on their way to get one.

ETA: thankfully, the bunny place closed already. Now he has to wait till he's back from Vegas this weekend and I won't be left with a new bunny to care for while he's gone! :-D

No kidding! We live near the beach so our "air conditioning" has always been the ocean breeze. It's insufferably hot in the house right now with it locked up tight. And it's going to remain that way the next few days till I can come up with a plan to staple-gun the $h1+€ out of the vinyl fencing. Or maybe superglue or a nail gun or something to keep Henry in the yard. Gonna try the Cat Whisperer's 45 degree angle trick first. That way we won't block sunlight to our garden.

I'm so glad Henry is home! I was thinking about him. :) I love to hear a good happy ending like this. :-D

wow I missed this whole thing but VERY relieved for the happy ending.
God bless Henry.
j.

ETA: And God bless all the people that helped you search. You have some amazing friends and family.

Thank goodness for prayers answered. I missed this whole thing and I am so sorry I was not around to give you support, so glad Henry is home and safe. I have a Henry also but he is a black lab  He has also gone missing overnight and I was blessed no one harmed him (long story)
Give your Henry a big hug from me and tell him no more out and scaring mom like that.

I am so happy you found your baby!!!! I just want to give you a possibility for what may have happened because I've done this in the past. There used to be this beautiful grey cat who hung around my house. I have no idea if he was a stray or belonged to someone. I started feeding him every day. I put a bowl of dry food and water on the porch and I had a little shelter out there for him. Well one night it was snowing and bad weather, cold yucky etc. He was sleeping on my porch and I felt so bad for him I brought him in the house. Your neighbor may have just been holding on to him until they knew who he belonged to. Another example there was a little kitten stuck in my neighbors tree. I got him out of the tree and noticed he had a collar but no tag. I reported him to all of the shelters and animal control and I kept him in my house for 5 weeks hoping someone would call. I even posted signs and on Craigslist. I took him to the vet to check for a microchip and no luck. Finally someone claimed him. So you never know!
