missing a dose

Hi All,

My cat (Petey) has been on insulin for 2 weeks now. I just started home testing today. He was 430 this morning before I fed him and 355 6 hours later. I have a vet apt on Tuesday and my guess is that she will say to go to 2.5 or 3 units.
Anyways, tomorrow I have to leave the apartment at 5pm and I won't be back until the following day in the afternoon. Unfortunately I don't have anyone to give him his shot. (I have been doing 8am and 8pm) I have heard that missing one dose is okay but I know missing two is not great. Should I give him a slightly early dose right before I leave?
Curious what you all think....

Can you add to your signature some more information? Add date diagnosed, insulin type, food you're feeding, and anything else you want such as other health concerns.

As you said generally it's not the end of the world to have to skip a dose. I've done it, but some insulin are more flexible in that department then others. How much earlier would the shot be? You could try moving tonight's shot back an hour and then tomorrow's shot back an hour.

Done.

Well, I was giving him his 2 units at 8am and 8pm. Last night I didn't give him his 2 units until 9pm (because I got home late). My plan for today was 6am and 6pm (I have to leave right at 6pm). He will have to miss a dose tomorrow morning and my mom will pick things up tomorrow evening.

That's fine. Life happens.

Just to clarify: you gave 2 u of Lantus at 9 PM last night and then 2 u at 6 AM today? If so, that will act like a dose increase. Lantus is less flexible than the non depot insulins when it comes to timing. The easiest thing to do is skip one shot if you have to shift the time more than an hour. If it's an hour or less, you can shift the shot time and then move back to your usual time by 30 minutes once a day or 15 minutes twice a day. It's the depot that makes this a bit trickier.

Sorry, I didn't see this response until now. Yeah, the issue was avoiding missing not one but two shots. In any case, we are 6 days later and Petey seems good. I am trying to coach my mom on the testing since she is the one who has them. She was not used to feeding at specific times so this has been a hard transition trying to maintain a feeding/testing schedule. If I am hearing you correct you are saying we should be diligent with our AM/PM feeding and testing times. If we are within an hour it is okay to give the shot but any more than that we should skip? And I know we should try not to make a habit of it. Also, what is depot and non depot insulin? That's the first I am hearing of those terms.

Janet... I'm going to try the Dr. Elsey's and Young Again Zero Carb. Do you leave out a combination of both all day?

Usually yes. I have one upstairs and one downstairs. At the moment I only have the young again out because cc had had higher than normal numbers due to a dental and a giant hairball. I may put them big out again tomorrow. Hairball is up and number was back to 76 this morning. :)

Both companies will send a free sample if you ask... So you can see if your cat prefers one over the other.

Good news about CC, Janet! :)
