Missed or partly given dose

I got wet fur this morning. Do I give shot again? Can someone look at today's SS data and advise? Wasn't planning to test a lot today as I missed some or all of the dose so numbers won't drop much. Does this really mess their system up when we misfire?

No extra shot.

You don't know how much went in and adding on to it could result in hypoglycemia (too low of a glucose level), which can be fatal. Better too high for a day, than too low for a moment!

Did I mention patience?

Yeah it's frustrsting. I'm only home for the whole day at weekends. Weekdays I'm only going to be able to to preshot testing am and pm and I can test after pm dose before bed. Other than that I do proper testing at weekend. Sucks when I misfire on a Saturday!

Fur shots happen, better to be too high than too low so any time you think fur shot its best to leave it be.

I noticed last night you gave 1 unit last night, then 2 this morning?

Yes he's been on two units in am for three weeks. Vet wanted me to give two at night too but I didn't feel comfortable with doubling the dose so I followed advice here to go slow. As his numbers were high only 9 hrs later I gave the two units again this morning. Will see what the pre test is like and decide what to give based on the results. Likely it will be on the high side tho due to the missed dose so I'll probably give two and test again after a couple hrs.

My only concern is that with lantus you are supposed to stick with a set dosage say 1 & 1 or 2 & 2. If your worried the 2 & 2 would be too much (which I do agree with until you have more data) I would do 1 & 1, or even 1.5 & 1.5

I think I'll trust my gut on this one. I only gave one unit last night because I knew it would be less than 12 hrs til next shot. It will like be 2 and 2 as one unit and one and a half units made little difference to his numbers. (I started there).

I understand trusting your gut, cant blame you there.

Here's a little info on how depot insulin's work, since they are differently from other's.

I also would recommend joining the Lantus support group since they can offer better dosing support, monitoring, questions...etc on specifically lantus

It's hard to not give insulin, but it's the best thing to do if you miss part or all of the dose. Every cycle is a do-over. And you get to go out and do something for yourself today.

Dosing for Lantus is based on how LOW the dose can get the cat. Try to ignore the high numbers you see and when Silver gets insulin in him, try to test somewhere around 4 to 7 hours after insulin. But you do have to wait several cycles on the same dose before you get a try picture of what the dose can do.

Thanks everyone. I'll do a curve in a couple weeks when he's been BID for two weeks. Hopefully no more misfires so it's accurate. Meanwhile I'll do AMPS, +2 PMPS, +2, + 4.

That's all I can do weekdays. Weekends I'll try and do a couple more.

Hi Juliet,
Yep, misfires are frustrating. Just take a look at Hank's SS when I first started back in September. I had several misfires. Argh!

I was going to suggest too to join a Lantus support group either the tight or relaxed. I don't use Lantus but ProZinc for Hank. I have joined a support group for ProZinc users, which is very helpful. Just remember, if you have an emergency, post on the main board because it will be seen by more eyes.

From what I have read about Lantus, it takes 3-5 days to get steady numbers and it's best to keep the same dose at AM and PM. It's not going to hurt to go slow; 1u AM & 1u PM; 1.5uAM & 1.5uPM, etc.

Hank is just now getting out of the 400's for pre shot numbers. It was hard for me to be patient to stay on the same dose for awhile but I did it.

Hang in there! You're doing great! Good job with the testing!

Thanks Kimmie. I will go over and join the relaxed Lantus group. I'm currently doing 2 and 2.

Good!

I think they'll be able to help so much. I saw that JuJu' s parents joined and that someone in group helped them through a hypo episode. From what I've read here, that can be pretty scary.

Just remember, we're all here to help one another. No question is a stupid question so just ask away!

How is testing going? It helped me when I started using the 28 gauge lancets. A friend gave me a bunch of 25 gauge (fine point) lancets which I started using a couple of days ago and I'm having trouble getting blood and when I do it's very tiny. So I guess I'm going to the store today to buy more 28's since I ran out of them.

Good luck in the support group and have a good Sunday!

I tried to see what guage my lancets were but there's noghing printed on them. The pharmacy gave me a big handful when I got the accu check.

Testing is going better. I think I was imkmg one the wrong place.

Thought of a hypo scares me.

Yeah, scares me too.

Hank got down to 49 once. I gave him 8 pieces of "kitty candy" ( high carb treats that I picked up before I knew better)! He was acting fine. Thank goodness he started climbing after that.

Yeah, I've looked on the lancet boxes before and they don't say what gauge. I think I saw a post on here that told what gauge the ones I'm using are (purple is 25 and white is 28). Otherwise, I'm not sure how to find out unless call the manufacturer or ask the pharmacy, I guess. :?:

I'm worried about Silver tonight. He's not himself and has gone off to lie in the other room. Usually he's by my side. Took a test and he's not low by any means - 17.8. He's had diarrhea for two days and he's just out of sorts :-(. He's also back to drinking much more than he had been.
