Hi;

My cat was just recently diagnosed with diabetes less than a week ago. I accidentally missed his shot this morning due to my alarm not going off and slept in and its almost two hours since he was supposed to have it. He has a vet appointment on the 15 of July as I had gone to the emergency vet because I thought he might have a urinary blockage and wasn't able to go to his normal vet due to the whole covid situation and the appointment on the 15 of July was when they could see him And thats where he got his the results also the emergency vet only gave me the insulin. My question is do I wait until the time he would get his second shot? and if that's the case what should I watch out for to make sure hes ok, as I only have the insulin. He's on Lantus if that helps. Sorry if this is too long, as Im worried and mad at my self for this.

WELCOME! This is a Lantus question as it is a depot insulin. I am not qualified to give advice on dosage. So hold on for more replies. This post will bump you to the top!

I’m sorry no one answered you sooner. I would just skip and give his next shot at the regular time at this point. 2 hours is too long, but if you did give the shot it will push his next shot by 2 hours too. So if you shot at 10am today, you’ll now need to shoot at 10pm. You can change the shot time slowly by 15 minutes increments if needed FYI

Hi, Thanks for responding back. I haven't given him his shot for this morning as it was sometime that had past. But I was just worried as this is my first time dealing with a cat that is diabetic, and I just worried that something bad is going to happen. If anyone has any advice that would be greatly appreciated.

I truly doubt anything will go wrong with one missed shot. Are you home testing kitties blood glucose? It really is the only way to keep your kitty safe. Knowing what that number is, gives you confidence to shoot or (not) insulin. Would you be interested in learning? You can find that info here:

JT is right. Nothing bad is going to happen. Your cat will just have a higher glucose level today because of the missed shot. What insulin are you using? Some are more forgiving than others. Also, it’s always better to give less than more. So skipping a shot is better than accidentally giving 2 or a bigger dose because it can cause a hypo

if you can set up your signature as JT mentioned, it will help us have all the important facts about hour cat at a glance. See mine below. Skip whatever doesn’t make sense to you like meter info since you’re not home testing yet I assume. Here:

Make sure your signature is up-to-date.
  • On the left, under Settings, Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.
    • There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
    • Add any other text, such as
    • Caregiver & kitty's name (optional)
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

Thank you!

Thanks, hes using Lantus. I haven't done testing yet as he was diagnosed via the emergency vet as i was not able to get him into his regular vet due to the covid19 situation. But I was able to get an appointment for the 15th of July. So far he seems to be acting normal.
