Who knows about this? I gave her a 1/4 tab supposed to help with appetite. Now I'm reading about it and I'm scared. She did not eat much put out 3 kinds of food finally ate some cheese and bacon

I dont know about it sorry, but doing a quick search on here i didnt see anything bad offhand about it except one person said it raised BG for her cat in particular, just that one cat.

When I googled it I seen stuff about disorientation and blindness and constant meowing. If any one had used this please let me know. I gave it to her with the last half hour because that's what the vet said to do but I wish I would have read about it first

I have given Mirtz. I prefer Cypro, but you don't need to be afraid to use Mirtazapine. The amount you gave is small enough that you shouldn't see excessive side effects. It did make my kitties a little hyper - we call it Meowzapine for a reason. But it does help make them eat.

May I ask why Paris isn't eating? Could she be nauseated? Did the vet give you anything for nausea? Are there any other health issues besides FD? Any other meds?

The pill is 10mg prescribed 1/4 tablet every 48 hours. After fighting to get her to eat and wouldn't she is now eating but I'm worried about the side effects.

I'm worried about the side effects.
She might not have any. Some cats don't. My Cinco didn't. My Minka just acted like her thyroid meds weren't working. If you do see behavior that concerns you, ask your vet for Cyproheptadine. The side effects are milder. Mitz is the go-to appetite stimulant for most vets. I had to talk mine into Cypro.

The vet said this will help with appetite and nausea. She was sick Sunday but hasn't vomited since then. I'm starting to wonder if she won't eat because she knows after she eats she gets an ear prick and a shot

Well I guess it will be another long night of worrying and chest pains. I called my doc and he told me start taking my Xanax 3 times a day because he knows I never take it. I know it's stress because as soon as I start to worry about that cat the pains start again. Maybe it's s race to see which one of us will die first. Oh well I go back to the doc on Friday for more tests so he can tell me nothing is wrong with me. Paris will see the vet on Monday and get fluids to help flush the kidneys and liver. I'll make sure they give me the test results of her blood work so I can post them on my spreadsheet

Please, someone, correct me if I am wrong but I believe Mirtz is generally recommended to be given every 72 hrs? Heather, I could be completely wrong about that, so please don't take my word for it! I just mentioned it hoping that someone who has used it can advise.

Take a deep breath, I know you're worried but stressing yourself to the max isn't going to help either you or Paris. I'm sure she will be fine tonight, your vet wouldn't have prescribed it if he thought Paris would be in any danger from it. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

It can help with nausea, from what I've read. I really don't think you need to worry about using it, Heather.

@Squalliesmom on Tanya's website she talks about a couple of studies that say you can give very small doses as often as every day, but recommends starting with every three days first. I would give it as prescribed by my vet to start.

I was afraid as well
But try to relax.
Rico actually does better on mirtz than cypro.
It takes a bit to kick in.
The first few times he was a little anxious but now he is so much happier on it. He eats he is lovey and much more social.
I know some cats do not do as well but all drugs have possible side effects.
It will wear off
Rico gets it every 2-3 days depending on the size of dose. It is a tiny dose either way.please try to relax.
Honestly I was terrified to try it but I was going away and much to my surprise he did great on it and we rotate the 2 now.

Please try to relax. I have had the chest pains too. I promise it gets better !
Rico does great on mirtz.
The first few times he had to adjust and was s bit clingy for about a hour or 2.
He ate really good and was so great after that.
Now he is ok from the start.

I gave Squeaker Mirtaz all the time and he had absolutely zero issues with it. The latest dosing protocol is 1/8 tablet once a day. While it can help with nausea, Cerenia might be better if there has been vomiting. I would also ask the vet about famotidine for stomach acid as this could be a part of the tummy issues. If a cat has stomach acid and is nauseous Mirtaz will not induce appetite.

Hi Heather,

I replied on your other thread. The worry with mirtazapine is that it can induce serotonin syndrome. The antidote is cyproheptadine. Fingers and paws crossed Paris'll be fine.

For info, my vet recommended 1/8 of a tablet once every 72 hours when he prescribed mirtazapine for Saoirse. [ETA - It may have been a 15mg or a 7.5mg tablet - can't remember.] (She only got one dose because she had an adverse reaction to it.) It is a very powerful drug (I speak from personal experience; I was prescribed it a number of years ago).

Is Paris pooping regularly? If not then you need to address that in order for other anti-nausea treatments to be effective.

Just scared me with things I read
It's no bad thing to read up on meds. I didn't know about possible adverse reactions to mirtazapine when it was prescribed for Saoirse and I got the drop of my life when I discovered the potential side effects, and it didn't help that she had an adverse reaction to it. (She was fine once the dose wore off, BTW.) Try to take comfort from the fact that you now have awareness of some of the warning signs of a problem and therefore you'd be in a better position to act effectively should the need arise. (Fingers and paws crossed that it won't!)

This study indicates that an appropriate starting oral dose for mirtazapine in cats may be 1.8 mg/cat instead of 3.75 mg/cat, and it is critically important to make sure cat owners know exactly how to dose and at what interval. The authors also recommend that to reduce the chances of accidental overdose, the 15-mg pills be divided into exact doses for clients before sending the prescription home with them. The study emphasizes the role of client education in this and all medication protocols.

This is the study.

Also, in the future please refrain from just specifing how much of a table without specifying the dosage/mg of the tablet. I have received from my pharmacy mirtazapine in 7 1/2 mg tablets.

sorry I thought I had posted it somewhere but it is a 10mg pill. give 1/4 pill every 48 hours. she seemed ok this morning but still not eating as much as I would like. The pill is so small by the time I get 1/4 of the pill the rest of it is dust on the counter and gets wasted

I would go with what your vet prescribed. She knows your cat and her circumstances.

I'm glad she's eating. Don't worry about the side effects unless you see something unusual. They don't happen to every cat, and in fact are not common. Vets would not prescribe it so often if it were dangerous.
