I have seen that Mirtazipam (sp?) is used for inappetance in cats. But how much do one give?
I have it at home, using it as anti-depressant, and it is on 30 mg. I don't think our vets here in Sweden have ever used it for inappetance in cats. Is it safe to use in cats?

The standard dose is 1/4 of a 15 mg tablet. Even that dose for many cat is too much and the cat act strangely. My Mitten is best on 1/8 to 1/6 of a 15 mg tablet.

Thanks Larry. What would we do without your knowledge!

I can't use my 30 mg tablets then, way too much.

I will ask the vet on Monday ... if Simba still lives then since he doesn't want to eat since Wednesday.

oh gosh. is a feeding tube an option? do they know what's wrong with him?

I honestly don't know what is wrong with him, he was at hospital from Saturday to Wednesday last week and they ran many tests on him, xrays, u-sound, blood work, fPLI, and all those was fine. But he is not fine not wanting to eat anything. But I don't know why. I am not leaving his side though, only for sleeping, which I haven't gotten much of. I hoping for a miracle. Not sure about the tube, vet hasn't suggested it.

ann, if he's not eating even with mirtazapine, i recommend syringe feeding. for some cats, syringe feeding is stressful. others like cleo really like it.

i would thin the pate kind of cat food with some tablespoons of water and stick it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, then i would put it in a large oral syringe (24 oz) that i got free from the vet. cleo would eat about 30 oz every 3 hours, then eventually she started eating on her own. took about 3 days of syringe feeding, i think.
i kept a cloth around her neck to catch the spills while i syringe fed, and i'd hold her upright against one of my arms while i syringe fed her. i'd also have a wet washcloth by us so i could wipe around her muzzle afterward so it wouldn't stain.

when she got really sick the mirtz wouldn't work to get her eating. but i still thought it was worth giving because it made her happy and purry.

Simba only ate once. Then he threw it up. But he have become more active. I also spoke to the vet today Monday, and asked if they use Mirtazapine. They did, but she didn't want to prescribe it. We are going back to the hospital tomorrow and see what they say then.

Simba has been in the hospital again since Tuesday, with a feeding tube in. I picked him up today and spoke to the vet who is the clinic manager, and I asked if I could use Mirtazapine, and that I had learned from here, US, that the dosage was 1/4 of a 15 mg tablet every 72 hour/3rd day. He said they give the dosage 1 whole 15 mg tablet every 72 hour/3rd day. Different practices. But he wasn't in favour of using it anyway. I will try it though with the tablets I have at home.

stick with the small dose, ann. is the mirtz getting him eating at all?
did they tell you why they didn't keep the feeding tube in?

I would not start with more than 1/4 of a 15 mg tablet. My Mitten gets spaced out on that dose and I give her 1/6 to 1/8 of a 15 mg tablet.
