I have posted before but for some reason can't find my posts and had to start a new account but anyways....My 12 year old cat Sam is newly diagnosed. He has been extremely constipated and had to have feces extracted last week. My vet had mention he had heard of using miralax but was not sure if it would affect blood sugar. After researching online and calling the company I was told it is ok for human diabetics.....gave it to sam!!! HE has gone to the bathroom every day for a week!!! YAY 1/4 tsp (I force straight down his throat with his potassium to make sure he is getting) once a day!! I never thought I would be so happy about my cat pooping LOL So for anyone out there wondering I think it works great and was only about 6.oo at local store- Jen and Sam

Hey... I have a cat named Sam and my name is Jennifer

We love Miralax, but in case you didn't know it it's odorless and tasteless, it's very easy to add it right to their canned food or water without any hassle. While giving Miralax, please be sure to increase water intake because it works by moving water into the colon and in doing so it draws water away from other organs.

Hopefully not being constipated will lower Sam's BGs. Are you hometesting him to check for that?

Well, yes..it does work.

Miralax should be taken with food/water.

I'm only aware of one form...a white powder. So I don't know how you force that down
his throat...just can't picture it. Unnecessary stress for him.

You can mix it directly into canned food and add about 1/2 teaspoon water to
the fix and stir it all up.

Miralax is tasteless and odorless. If Sam eats all the food, he'll get his Miralax.

You should be able to get the Potassium in him the same way (mix into food)...my Smokey
always got his that way. Try it and see how it goes. Pilling is so stressful for kitties.

Many of us here use it with great success.

You can get the store-brand at most big-box stores like WalMart, Walgreen's, CVS, even Costco.

Just look for the ingredient "polyethlyene glycol"....the stuff is quite cheap, as you know.

yes Miralax is a powder but the potassium is a liquid and it is orange flavored (the only way vert could get me any was through the human pharmacy so it is naturallt an orange flavor I have them add fish flavor to try to mask but he will not eat!!!!) I mix the powder in with the liquid in the syringe with a little baby food for taste and shake the heck out of it then force it down! My vet contacted every vet in town and no one had any potassium. Sam really is eating off and on and he HAS to get both his potassium got really low and he was unable to use his legs!! He also gets sub Q fluids we are still working on the hydration but he had not pooped in 9 days on his own until this and vet was very concerned. He is a very calm cat (I AM LUCKY) I used him as a therapy cat for 7 years. So it is pretty easy to quickly shoot this little bit down his throat. Where do you all get your potassium from? my vet seemed to be at a loss I was so happy to find the human stuff just because that is keeping his levels at an ok point so he can be home with me! he had to be on a special pump for 4 days at the vet to pump the correct amount of potassium into his system. Vet says no risk with oral because body will only use what he needs but IV can be risky. best of luck -jen and sam

Oh and How funny is that jen and sam but also I live in Milford ME I see u live in Milford Ct LOL and yes I am home testing.....not lowered yet but we are still trying to find right dose of pro z -----jen

That's crazy that we both live in Milford, although different states.

Tucker takes potassium every day. The vet gives it to us. It's 100 pills per bottle, called Tumil-K, manufactured by Virbac AH, Inc. P.O. Box 162059, Fort Worth, TX 76161, phone 800-338-3659

It's Potassium Gluconate 2mEq

Do you get Sam's potassium level every so often.

Yes his level last week was only a 2.3 the day he loss use of his legs it was a 2.1 so we are walking a thin line! but he has been eating alot more on his own since then so hopefully next test better and he is jumping on my 7 ft tall clothing rack so I assume it is improving......Thanks so much I will definately look into that stuff because I am sure this fishy orange nastyness is awful for him but he has to have it so........I figured it was out there just what and how to get was the problem! And when he is eating all of what I put in front of him that will be easier to give the miralax too! thanks-jen

Tucker crashed in late March, 2 something potassium. Since then his level has been 3.5, 3.9, 3.9 and today 4.1, our first over 4 :)

He takes 1.5 pills twice per day crushed in grain free Soulistic tuna fish cat food. He loves the tuna stuff so he eats the potassium right up. I'm sure if you give your vet the info he can get you a bottle. One bottle lasts me about a month.

I'd try to get it sooner rather than later, I saw what low potassium did to Tucker and I'd hate to think of your Sam being that lethargic and feeling sickly too.

Glad Sam is eating more and jumping, that's an excellent sign.

yes it was really really scary he was literally dragging his hind legs by crawling and could barely lift his head......we thought we would have to put down.....I cried all day and then was crying with joy when I went to transfer him to the overnight vet and he WALKED to me and meowed for momma!! thanks so much talking to vet on thurs and will relay this info....Apparantly vets around here don't regulary prescribe the stuff and have no idea where to get it.....the human stuff was something and I thankfully had a vet who was bright enough to call around to human pharmacys after no luck with pet supply or other vets in area......thanks ps tucker is beautiful!! -jen
