I have been noticing having a problem with every time I give my cat MiraLAX her number seem to go off the charts does anybody else have this problem? I thought it was just a mistake and took her off MiraLAX for a week he's been somewhat constipated so I've given her hairball remedy it helps a little .when I started to notice your numbers going up a few weeks ago she was getting MiraLAX twice a day and her numbers were in a five and 600 range! So I decided to stop the MiraLAX he would happen and her numbers came down into the 100's to 200's.
She was having problems with constipation so I thought I'll try the MiraLAX again I give it to her the night before yesterday and yesterday afternoon only two doses and this morning -2 hours before her shot was required she was already at 379! I had to give her insulin early. Has anybody else had this experience please let me know what you did about it

Max has been taking miralax daily for a few months now and off and on since we started this dance and it hasn't had any effect on his BG. It doesn't contain any form of sugar.

Do you no longer keep a ss as the one in your signature is from 2014. How early did you give the insulin?

Metamucil w/no added sweeteners may work. 1/8 tsp once a day.
You can buy it on Amazon.
I give this to Michael, and it doesn't affect his bg's.
Hope this helps.:cat:

I have been doing the Walmart brand of miralax since the first part of March for Skooter. When he was still having issues it was 1/4 teaspoon twice a day, now for "maintence" he gets 1/8 teaspoon twice a day. I have not seen any change in his numbers since adding that in.
He was already on a Cosequin (one tablet per day). I added a probiotic at the same time as the miralax. He gets half a tab in the AM cycle and the other half in the PM cycle.

Wow , thanks for the Input! I did a little searching and found this..
Review: could Miralax cause High blood sugar (Hyperglycemia)?
Summary: High blood sugar is found among people who take Miralax, especially for people who are male, 60+ old, also take medication Lactulose, and have Multiple myeloma.

We study 9,033 people who have side effects while taking Miralax from FDA and social media. Among them, 95 had High blood sugar.

I know she's a cat , but now I wonder?? I will look for the Metamucil..it just seems odd how she spikes so ridiculously high when I give her miralax :(

I would recommend discussing with your vet before you use Metamucil for your kitty- it not be the best to use for a kitty with chronic constipation as it draws water into the colon, adding bulk and making stools very large and difficult to pass. Another potential problem is with a cat that is already dehydrated, Metamucil can create an obstruction in the bowel. I would discuss any change in medications/problems with chronic constipation with your vet as constipation can be a symptom of an underlying disease such as CKD.

We have used miralax a lot with our cats and never seen a problem in BGs with any of the sugar cats. You are using the plain powder in the purple labeling right? Not a liquid or some type of flavored stuff.

Alternatives I've used or had prescribed:
*Olive oil (1/2 to 1 tbsp per day or 5-10 drop with an eyedropper) in their food
*Pumpkin worked well with Sly. No increase in BGs, it seemed like his came down a bit will eating the pumpkin. I just did about 1/2 to 1 tsp twice a day.
*My vet also prescribed Lactalose. Everything said it was safe for diabetics but I thought it smelled like childrens cough syrup so I never used it on any of the cats. It is supposed to be a good alternative when Miralax doesn't work.

If you are on Lantus and varying shot times based on the preshot numbers, this could cause some very strange numbers that may look like the Miralax is doing something funny when it might just be fluxing caused by inconsistent dosing.

Hi and thank you very much for the suggestion of the olive oil I have tried it on her in the past and she will not touch her food if there's only one drop in it. I try to give her shot every day the exact times in the mornings and at night .
I might only be off like five minutes at the most. But in the past few weeks I've had to give her her insulin a little early because if I Check her @ + 10 and she like 400 I can't let her wait till it's time for your shot? If I could show you her chart you would see what I mean I started on the MiraLAX about three weeks ago on her levels were like 500 to high on the meter which never happens! The only other thing I gave her was b12 ?
so I took everything away and didn't give her anything her levels came dow.n I started her back on her B12 about a week ago. Her number stayed relatively low. Two days ago I started her back on the MiraLAX and she's already in 400's again so evidently it's got something to do with the MiraLAX. That's the only conclusion I can come too.

Hi sorry I lost the link to my new page she has been on Lantus for over a year. How do I put the link on here?

My 16-yr. old cat had 2 steroid shots for a bad back over a month's period of time, and the vet said it spiked his blood sugar levels and they should return to normal -- steroid shots do this in some cats. Since 2010, his glucose was 120 - 150 at the highest. After 3 mos. since the shots, and testing and giving Lantus twice a day, the cat still is diabetic, and the vet now says if he's had pancreatitis, the pancreas is scarred and will result in a diabetic cat. He has had 2 bad bouts where we went to the vet for pancreatitis. We were using Lactulose, but it is sugar based and raised his blood sugar levels, so then we are using Miralax. I, too, see a rise in the blood sugar levels, but it's better than having him go through an enema, which we had to do, or use Lactulos which spikes it even higher. I was hoping for a reversal, but I don't see it happening. However, his sister also was diabetic and on Lantus twice a day 2 units each time reversed after a year and a half...I'm hoping the same good thing will happen to him.

I was on a low carb diet last year and they said NO miralax or anything that had anything that will metabolize as sugar/carb--the advertising is tricky- I have heard slippery elm bark by apawthecary is good and the marshmallow--they have a 800 number and pretty knowledgeable people I usually talk to a lady named "Rainy" -

Max does fine with miralax and he has chronic pancreatitis diagnosed 6 or 7 years ago. I was told lactulose would not be okay for a diabetic.

Thank you for letting me know. My vet, who I do trust, said Lactulose was fine, until I read it was sugar based. We have to be so careful esp. for the little ones. I heard of pumpkin that someone else put on here for BM, but how do you get a cat to eat pumpkin? Mine (I have 6 feral/abandoned) won't touch it.

You mix a tiny amount of pumpkin in the canned food and most cats don't notice it. It's an ingredient in some foods made by Soulistic, Weruva, and Mauri. Baby food squash helps too. With miralax I read recently to spread it out over all the meals. Max just gets 1/8 teaspoon. How much did you give? And yes lactulose contains sugar.
