We got the anemia panel results back today... well, sort of. My vet told me that her hematocrit was sort of low, and that other values were unusual, so he wanted me bring her in so he could check a few more things. He re-ran her PCV and got results similar to what he got on Tuesday. The lab said her hematocrit was <10%, but the PCV he did the same day was about 20%, and his test today showed the same. Other values were way off too, such as sky-high white cell counts (we are lucky if hers go low-normal even with a high fever). We've decided that the lab had to have mixed up her blood or the report with another cat, because there's no way the results we got are hers. He hasn't had any severely anemic cats in the clinic this week, so the lab must have mixed up specimens somehow. One good bit of news is that he repeated her liver function tests and values have come down! GGT is still high, but not severely elevated like it was. We didn't do the test fasting, but I'll take a decrease at this point.

Talk about a range of emotions! On the one hand I'm glad to know she's not in need of an immediate blood transfusion, but on the other hand it's frustrating that we still don't know more about the anemia and that we'll have to repeat the tests again. Stupid lab. cat(2)_steam

What ashame she has to repeat the lab work.

The vets and labs haven't been to kind to our kitties this week.
Glad the liver enzymes are better.

I hope they get the anemia figured out.

You have been through a lot lately-- I hope it gets better.

Good grief, sorry about that Wendy! We just aren't having any luck this week! Thanks for checking on us & for the concern! It does help knowing all of you are out there!

I cannot tell you how my heart went into my throat when he said her HCT was "low". When I asked how low, he said 10%. Bless his heart, he didn't want to alarm me by giving what the lab actually said it was so he fudged the number a little when he talked to me. I went through several years of serious anemia problems with another cat that passed on in April, so he knew it would upset me. Anything below 13% really is too low as it can cause organ damage. If your cat is below 10%, you'd better have a donor cat handy for a transfusion. Needless to say I had Shaikha bundled up and in the car in record time!!

I am so sorry that youhave to do the tests again, but it is good to hear that the liver
enzymes are up
Fingers, toes and paws crossed for better results the second time!
Hang in there!
