Hi, so I just did a reading now and its 380- 4+ from PM shot which was 222..
Ive seen a trend that its lower in the nighttime and higher in the morning.
is it possible she needs more insulin at night than the day, and are there cats on different doses every 12 hours?
thanks !

Hi Rosa,
Good to see all those lovely numbers in the SS.. that data is very helpful
Mimi is still getting used to the insulin so her numbers will fluctuate up and down. Don't worry if you see some of the numbers up higher at times. It's fairly common to see higher numbers in the morning....
And cats often drop lower at night.
But just when you think you have it all figured out, they change!
The numbers you need to be concerned with are the low numbers.

Lantus works best when the same dose is given night and morning. Lantus is a depot insulin
Read about depot insulins here
http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/what-is-the-insulin-depot.150/

If you swap around with the dose it messes with the depot and you will get get wonky numbers.
Mimi is doing well.
What you need to be concerned with is
  • Making sure Mimi gets enough food throughout the day and night
  • Mimi gets her insulin
  • You are testing before every shot and during the cycles
  • Testing every day if possible for ketones
  • Adding a spoonful of water to her food so she gets extra fluids
  • Keep asking us questions......
You are doing really well.
How are you managing with work and looking after Mimi.?

I just got automatic feeders for them- I’m setting it to feed them once in the night and once when I’m at work- I’ll feed them Before I leave and when I get home.
So I think there’s food happening every 6 hours?

What do you think about the number getting higher then PMPS at the 4+ mark? I’m wondering if the 1.25 units is too low? I get worried also because i think if there was enough insulin then she wouldn’t have gone DKA.. so since I’m at 1.25 units how will I know if she’s getting enough insulin? Also I get so many bubbles drawing up into the syringe from the pen. I always worry if her numbers get high like that it’s because I actually didn’t shoot her correctly or maybe I didn’t measure 1.25? I hope that made sense- I’m waking in the middle of the night to ask, hehe.

Hi Rosa and Mimi, I haven't posted before, but I have been following Mimi's progress for a few days. Bron will be asleep now so I thought I'd try and answer your query.

With Lantus, when you skip a shot it drains the depot (link to info on depot, please follow it and read if you haven't already), so you won't see the full effect of the dose until the depot starts to fill again, so it make take a couple of cycles before you start to see what the dose will do. (for George that would be cycle 3 or 4).
The drop into the 50's when Mimi was on 1.5u tells us that 1.5u was to much, so you need to first see if this new reduced dose will hold, and for that we need to wait for the depot to fill. As long as she is not throwing ketones I would hold for now, if she was throwing ketones we would need to pursue a different strategy.

I can't see a ketone test for today/tonight, I would make it a priority to get one.

Do you think you could note on the ss when you are feeding and how much. You could annotate it on the grid with an * and then note in the comments what you fed and how much at each particular feeding, it might not seem important now, but it will help you in the future if you find it becomes necessary to alter food intake to manage the curve. I always made not of what I fed and when it helped me devise a strategy that worked for George, and more importantly helped others help me when I was starting out.:)

Please remember to go back and read information that's been posted. Bron answered your question about dosing different amounts in the AM and PM -- as did Gil.

The short answer to your question is that if you give differing amounts of insulin at AM and PM you will end up with wonky numbers. Many cats experience lower numbers at night -- it's why we stress getting PM tests. Just follow the method you've chosen for your dosing strategy (and put this information in your signature so we're all aware of what you're doing and don't keep pestering you) and Rosa will start to respond.
